Leaves can be varied colors, have surface patterning or texture you need to watch out for. Feel free to share favorites anytime you come across one you like.

Here are some I've found online that I like.

Like @Kadee I'm a big fan of the foliage of begonias. Some of mine:

What I’ve always referred to as my giant maiden hair fern ….is this familiar to you @MarkD

Yes indeed. I love them too though I haven't had much luck growing it. We are pretty arid and I don't irrigate much. A native fern related to maidenhair ferns is the Five Finger Fern, Adiantum aleuticum or Western Maidenhair Fern. This one I have tried to grow so many times that I no longer am even tempted to try growing it. They have a beautiful stand of it at one of our nearby bot gardens.

The one I have ( I’ve got 2 pots of it ) I had growing in the ground in Adelaide ….in small shade house …
and I managed to dig a little bit out to pot, when we sold our home ….this is the same plant + the other pot …not as large I pottered ….in 2004 …..it’s never been out of that pot …

South Aust is the driest state in Australia so I know what you mean about being arid , we’re not had a drop of rain
Since about Oct ….we've got mains water and about 12.000 ltrs of storage for rain water ( tanks are getting low )
@MarkD however we’ve only got a smallish block of land our homes built on ..it’s a typical Aussie house block about 20 mtrs wide …43 mtrs deep

That describes most parcels here too. We are wider than most at 100 feet so about 30 meters but also 120 feet deep. Originally we were zoned commercial but had it changed to residential sine that cuts the tax to half. I have friends who just go ahead and water daily but for a short time early in the day. But I’d feel guilty doing it.

I wonder if you have it in a fast draining medium? I believe they are one of those that want both good drainage and moisture.

One of my favorite plants for foliage is the passion vine P. Membranaceae. It is purple on the backside and olive green on the front but they glow like copper when backlit. Here it is in bright sun, covering my tool shed:

The purple you see belongs to the sepals through which the flowers emerge. Backlit looking at the front side:

Backlit in deeper shade:

The sepals permit longer than the flowers. The flowers are chartreuse but I'll go post those in the Flower A Day thread.

If you don’t mind me asking @MarkD how long have you and Mrs D lived where you are ?

We’ve been in this home 18 years and it was just the house no concrete paths ( we had it built ) nothing just a dust bowl so we know what it’s like to establish a garden from a windy dust bowl

Most ā€œgardening soil ā€œ we have was purchased due to the solid limestone we have here ….most of veggie areas is raised garden beds , purchased ā€œgood soilā€œ by trailer load for RGB but it’s horrible dosent hold moisture

Our Japanese Maple drops its leaves in late November / mid December. Some get on the Cement front Porch.
with a gentle rain they get wet and leave real cool prints on the cement. I power was them as
they fuzzy out in the spring. Its like I planed the printing of the cement with Maple leaves every
year.

Got a photo ? I’d love to see that ….We don’t see many maples in South Australia it’s to hot in summer for them
I’ve seen a few really nice ones in Australia’s capital city…called Australian Capital Territory (known as / called Canbera ) it’s 2 days drive from where I live …
they are only about 5 ~ 6 foot tall and growing in shaded front gardens @papa tiger

I can picture that if you ever get a picture of it I'd love to see it.

Shade loving plants ..begonia and White princess View attachment 393933View attachment 393934
@MarkD all my shade loving plants are growing on my back and side verandahs …but mainly the back verandah which is attached to the back part of our home , they used to suffer from the wind , then we had a sorta heavy duty types of blinds installed ( we can put them up and down manually ) and my begonias really picked up well
The verandah is 4 x 14 mtrs
