Favorite mystery series?

A Quiet American
I’ve been watching the series “Foyle’s War” and while it is very well acted and I enjoy the characters, somehow it does leave me feeling melancholy. Not sure why exactly.

I’ve also enjoyed “Vera” and “Endeavor” (all the characters were exceptionally well portrayed). But I guess my fave has been Inspector Lewis. The witty/smart repartee between Lewis and Sergeant Hathaway is too fun!

do you have a fave British detective / mystery show?

Cadfael has always been my favourite, followed by Midsummer Murders (the original series, not the new one) I don't know if Rosemary and Thyme come into that category but I still watch all the repeats.

I like all the ones mentioned here. I would also add Campion, the Helen Rendell Mysteries (these include the Lord Peter Wimsey ones, but there are others in a series called the Helen Rendell Mysteries), the Miss Fisher Mysteries, the old Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett, and of course Hercule Piorot, and Miss Marple.

I LOVE all of the British dramas and mysteries. The characters are all true-to-life and not ''glamorous'' (like in CSI:Miami, where everyone was young and good-looking, so fake). I like most of the ones already mentioned above, but "Vera" really hits me, she's so tough and yet compassionate. The only thing that annoys me is that she calls everyone, even the perps, "love". I also love "Unforgotten'', they show both her tough detective side and her vulnerable private side.

The OP asked about British shows, but in the US my favorites are Columbo, Jesse Stone, and Law and Order: Criminal Intent (have a crush on the Robert Goren character).

I liked it, too, did she ever get to catch her daughter's rapist/killer? The actor who played him was good, he first played a kind parson in another show and then a cruel psychopath in Happy Valley.
Let's just say he was caught. No details, don't want to be a 'spoiler.'
