FDA plan to ban menthol smokes

Does legal or illegal matter anymore?
Banning something They just made an item harder to get or people can improvise like @MickaC.

WHY did FDA approve in first place ? WHY have they been dragging their feet on this while making Snap decisions on other items....

Smoking is a choice ....... quitting is also a choice.... millions spent on ads trying to scare people about health dangers did nothing so now ban something........ funny they do not stop funding the quitting ad campaigns........

My state made such a over the top fuss when they made use of cell phones illegal while driving .........except with hands free devices ........
yet they do no enforcement so law IMO is worthless....
here the law is enforced strictly when it comes to phones and driving...and more recently with hands free..

It’s illegal to hold and use a phone, sat nav, tablet, or any handheld device that can send or receive data, while driving or riding a motorcycle.

For UK drivers, this means that they cannot use a device in your hand for any reason.

The law still applies if a driver is stopped at traffic lights, queuing in traffic, or even supervising a learner driver

Drivers must never use a handheld device when behind the wheel, even if it is offline or in flight mode.

any driver who breaks the law, can get up to 6 penalty points and a £200 fine. They could also lose their licence if they passed their driving test within the last 2 years.

Drivers can get a further 3 penalty points if they do not have a full view of the road and traffic ahead or proper control of the vehicle if they are using a handheld device. ( a total of 12 points on a driving licence means an automatic Ban)

Offenders can also be taken to court where they can be banned from driving and receive a maximum fine of £1,000 - or up to £2,500 for lorry or bus drivers.

It's VERY illegal here , has been for years
Cell phone use, handheld, is illegal in some places in the US, but as @Jeni says it is poorly or inconsistently enforced. When driving from state to state it is hard to know what the local laws are. I don't know of a US state that has outlawed handsfree cell phone use.

It appears handsfree cell phone use is safer than holding the phone, but still dangerous. I am sure driving while talking with a passenger, or eating, or putting on makeup can be dangerous too. The government can only do so much to protect us from ourselves and others around us.

There is a big difference even between states not to mention between the US and UK
I just know in my state .... it is NOT enforced ... seemingly at all so the big waste of time and money promoting the "law" equals the same as
"STOP or I will yell STOP again"

Probably because people have argued that many eating or other things is just as dangerous
they once stopped a lady a few years ago breast feeding an infant while driving 70mph down the interstate.

I love being able to talk to people all over the world. I love this board. I love the internet where we can access so much information to help us everyday.

I do though, remember that life was good before all of this. Sitting at home, waiting on that boy to call you for a date. Letters and cards sent between family that were received with great excitement. Cellphones are good, but they have taken over the world. People have forgotten everything that came before, so many are so obessed that they have little time for true connection with their families.
Such a great job you do explaining the realities.

Don’t smuggle in any for me…….I don’t like American cigarettes, never have.😉.
I could always identify the distinctive smell of American tobacco, compared to the Canadian brands. The US smokes were a blend of Virginia and Turkish tobaccos, while the Canadian brands were 100 percent Virginia tobacco. JimB.

Most of the land that used to be used here in Ontario to produce tobacco is now planted with peanuts, and ginseing root. The ginesing takes about 6 years to mature to sellable size, but the international market price for it is very high, and the Canadian grown product is highly prized in China and Korea. Prices per kilo are $40 to $70 CDN. So the farmers who used to grow tobacco have switched to other crops here. Jimb.

Back when I smoked, I read that menthol makes the cilia in the lungs more brittle and likely to break off. So I didn't smoke menthol even though I liked it better. I think it should have been banned a long time ago.

I quit smoking about 4 years or so ago. The smell of it is disgusting in the air and on clothes. I never really liked menthol but know others that did. Nicotine is a very addicting drug. I still use nicotine lozenges but at a very very low dose now. Not sure when I will give them up but sometimes worry what it is doing to me internally.
"nicotine may result in: (1) positive reinforcement, (2) negative reinforcement, (3) reduction of body weight, (4) enhancement of performance, and protection against; (5) Parkinson's disease (6) Tourette's disease (7) Alzheimers disease, (8) ulcerative colitis and (9) sleep apnea." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1859921/

My previous doctor explained that he was in favor of nicotine, because it has many positive benefits. He just didn't recommend smoking to get it.

US citizens may now bring back a limited number of Cuban made cigars from Canada, for PERSONAL use, not for resale. link. Cuban Cigars and the Updated Laws (liveabout.com) JimB.
Thanks, I did not know that. I will try to find some to bring home. Though our primary objective is fishing out of Port Hardy.

At the rate I smoke a box would last a year or two.
