I've been helping my DIL tend her backyard garden for the past few years, but everybody in this part of Calif has had big issues with their gardens since the summer of last year; a record number of plant-eating bugs, a lot of strange, super-hearty weeds, and, of course, not enough water.
I think the bugs and weeds were blown in by wildfire winds. I'm seeing weeds right here at the apartments that I've never seen in the Sacramento Valley before. They're really sturdy, spiky and they grow really tall and thick, obviously designed to ward off deer and flying insects (ergo, their larvae) that live up north and in the eastern foothills.
Anyway, between the plant-murdering bugs and the water-thieving invader-weeds, local gardens aren't looking so good lately. Even the produce at our farmer's markets and in local grocery stores are small, short-lived, kind of soft, and don't taste quite right.
