Financial Book keeping

How many of you still keep a pencil and paper set of books? I know several people that keep all their finances on their computers. I was always worried the computer would fry, and I would have start over, after a lot researching to pull it back together.
So I keep a pencil and paper system, although my hubby thinks I just paranoid.
But I can grab two or three books in an emergency a lot easier than trying to collect a computer and CPU to haul out. I'm thinking most of us still do a pencil and paper system. :magnify:

I started keeping the books for our business in 1977, My good friend at the time, also kept the books for her husband`s business, She had soooooo many computer issues-every day she would be in tears with the frustration of it all. So I was scared off and decided to do everything by hand. And for 34 years I did. Payroll, accounts payable,billing-everything was done by hand. Of course,by the time we did go on computers (just for estimating) I knew I wasn`t going to because my brother in law would go through paperwork every day looking for things and make a huge mess. He was the same way with the computers-just never "got" them and our tech guy had to stop by almost daily to straighten out his messes. So I knew there was no way I was going to put my stuff on there and spend my days trying to unravel the mess. But yeah,I think I was the last person in the world to do that much bookkeeping by hand.

Mrs. Robinson I to had that same problem with a B-I-L. He thought he new all about bookkeeping, and he would wait until I left for the day to change things, therefore all information and balances were a mess. I never told him that I keep a paper set of books. Without them I would have gone bonker each time he made a mess.:grrr::hit:

Yes! Did we have the same BIL by chance?? I always thought there could never been another like him....

Definitely paper and pencil. I have them all to hand in hard copies and can find something in minutes and know it won't be lost.

I'm the same as you Ina terrified that I'll lose the lot if I keep them electronically, whereas the rest of my family wouldn't dream of doing things in such an archaic way and keep everything on their computer!

I check all our bank accounts every weekday to ensure they are in order. I know that is a bit obsessive, but until his illness my husband was always in charge of our business affairs. Fortunately our eldest daughter is very business savvy so if I am not sure of something she sorts it out, and does anything complicated for me.

Sorry Ina; computer for me!

However, as my affairs are very simple, a lot of it is my head; so I always know roughly where I am at; the computer just confirms it....

I use both. I used to keep books for our small family business for many years and have carried it over to my simple financing, my biggest problem is lack of knowledge on taxes, even though I have a man that files for me, I'm unsure on the tax advantages and disadvantages throughout the year.

Both. Keep spreadsheets on the computer, pay a few bills on line, check bank & credit cards there a few times a week but write down every debit or check transaction in check register, keep a little notebook to track all charge purchases. I have my utilities etc all send me paper bills in mail tho. But I've always been the sort of person who loves to write things down on paper.

Pencil and paper for me, I don't keep any personal financial information on my computer, once a month I balance my checkbook, etc.

Cheques are fast disappearing here; many shops won't take them; and the banks were trying to phase them out, but they are not allowed to; at the moment.
i use about 10 cheques a year...

Mrs. Robinson, Was your BIL a lady's man and bar rover? If the answer is yes, my next question is, is he gone 16 out of 24 hours a day? If he is, then will you keep him forever? Pa-lease!!! :eek:nthego:

Vivjen, The seizures I had the last time, stripped me of my memory for over a year. If there hadn't been paper books for my hubby to look up our accounts with, I shudder to think about the mess that could of been. I work well with programs, but not online things. Hubby does well online, but «¿^~* up all programs.

See Hollydolly, paranoia does have it's place. :giggle:

Jackie, I agree with you on the taxes. It is hard to keep up with the variances from year to year. We have our taxes done by a CPA yearly. OH poo, I just had a thought. What if he gets hacked? But surely he is well guarded. I'll be calling him.

Not me. I prefer the computer. I find it faster to find things. I like being able to pull up income and expense reports, see how I compared to budget on a month to month basis. For me the analysis is much better on the computer. Have done it this way for the past 15 years.

I have a hard back exercise book where I write down our expenses for the month. The budget I do on the computer but print out a copy in case of, !!
