Finding New Relatives

In 2019 a woman found me because my cousin did ancestry. Turns out during World War Two in Europe my dad was single and had a baby with an English woman married with 2 boys.

No clue if he ever knew he had a child. We texted every day for a year but once I mailed her pictures of him and supplied information for her to finish the genealogy she told me to leave her alone. I was very hurt and any other relatives can F off.

At my husband's family reunion last year, a couple came down Maryland. He had found my husband's family on ancestry and got in touch. My husband had brought a lot of old pictures from that side of the family and the new relative was able to see family he'd heard about over the years but never knew. It was nice.

I was well into middle age when my father made a remark before my sister that led to the astonishing revelation that he had a sister who had died before he was even born! My paternal grandmother was a Christian Scientist, you see, and when her daughter developed appendicitis refused to have her medically treated! She died as a result, and my father never met his elder sister nor I my aunt. I think of my Aunt Grace, however, who died young and unnecessarily. I won’t let her be forgotten…

My dad was married twice and I knew very little about his first family or his early life. A few years ago a daughter of his first born child contacted me. We emailed and eventually spoke on the phone, we each learned some interesting history about my dad (her grandfather).

But you know what? That was good enough for me. She was wanting to meet and co mingle families but I kind of shut that down, I'm simply not interested in adding a bunch of relatives to my life.

I wanted to add a note to my above comments.

One good thing that came from contact with someone from my dad's first family is I found out my dad's parents names and even where they are buried, this was info we never had. I was able to Google the cemetery and get a picture of their grave stone. The woman even emailed a picture she had of my dad and a sibling with his parents from about 1910. (My dad was born in 1902) Never saw a picture of him as a child or his parents before so that was cool.

you see as his child you needed and should always have had those Basic things.. so it's great that you managed to get them.. . out of curiosity did your dad look anything like how you imagined ?

I never thought about what my dad looked like when he was young. I don't thing I ever even thought of him as being young, he was 59 when I was born so was always old. But we did look similar as kids, I'm the little blonde kid in the top picture, I would have been seven, dad is below me, he was about 66 then. Bottom picture is what his granddaughter sent me, my dad, his twin, and his parents, sh said the picture was from 1910 so dad was eight. I know my dad was a twin but those kids don't look like twins.lol

..and you look very like those twins, who certainly look like brothers, and from what I can tell from your picture at 7, you look just like them
