I would imagine that the Number 20 on the truck is the engine number and squad number, correct? Is each squad tied to a dedicated area or can they be sent to anywhere inside LA County? When a new fireman candidate is hired, how long is their training before they are assigned to a company? Does each company also have a quint?

Do they answer medical calls as well as fire calls. Like if someone calls for an ambulance inside a residence, does the fire department respond also?

Just being curious.

Love the pics @Ronni. What a exciting visit. When I took my grandsons to visit a firehouse the guys showed them a "heat camera" they used to track human foot steps in a dark and smokey room. They were awed.

Looking forward to more...

Love that you asked the questions! 👍
I’ll get the andwers From Corey tomorrow because I’m not certain of my information other than each station is assigned a specific area in LA County. If they're already out on a call the next closest station will be dispatched.

Every time I visit I learn more!

@911
In Ca the squad refers to the paramedic unit, and the station covers a district. So Corey is at station 20 and all the vehicles are labeled that way.

The boots train for 17 weeks before before they’re assigned to a station. Not every station has a quint, though every station has a piece of equipment that can pump water. Every station has an engine though only 4 or 5 stations in the entire county has a quint.

Corey’s station is EMS and fire. They have a truck, an engine and a squad. If an engine and a squad are dispatched, it means that advanced medical care is needed and dispatch also then sends out a private ambulance. Care is transferred to the ambulance for transport to the hospital after the paramedics have done their job.

Let me know if you have more questions!! Happy to raise everyone’s awareness. I know how completely clueless I was to start out...not that you are @911 as a first responder yourself!

I find it interesting how different states deploy their emergency services. Some states send a cop to each medical or fire call, while others only send what’s required to do the job.

I know. I’ve had the same discussion with Corey. In LA county, dispatch determines what they will send. Minimum response is an Engine. Max response is....well lemme just send you some pics. 😂. Stand by.....

Here are a couple of examples.
Wildfire first response, and then and second response If the the Captain feels more is necessary

And then there’s a structure fire response.
