My first and second grade were only half days. First graders went in the morning and second graders went in the afternoon. I was five years old and it was exactly a mile to walk to school, crossing a very busy highway with no traffic lights. Mom was home with a sickly newborn and my dad had the car every day, so walk it was. The "traffic boys" met us at the highway and hurried us across. I hated school for the first couple of months.
My daughter's first day of school, I walked her in and then sat in the parking lot and cried for a half hour.
I took my granddaughter to school for her first day. She asked me not to cry and embarrass her.
