If he had called you, "Baby" instead of Mother, would that have made a difference?
People are unusually sensitive sometimes about what strangers say to them. I've been chastised more than once for calling a woman, who was obviously well past her 16th birthday, Ma'am. I guess the thing to do would have been to ask the person if there was some ulterior motive for their using that word. You say that it was said, "matter-of-factly" and perhaps that's all it was. How about if instead of making Mother "The M word", we all just stop being so suspicious of each other. I think that would be the N word, (Nice)!

In many countries, calling an older woman "mother" is respectful.
