Five police officers were shot in Florence, S.C. It's an active scene. The shooter is in custody. One of the officers has died.

So sorry to hear this. Condolences to the family of the slain officer.

Nowhere can I find out what 5 officers were doing there, in other words, what happened in the first place?

I did read that the suspect in custody is an older male. A 20 year old male was found injured inside the house.

Now it's 7 shot, one death. Now there is some info; officers were executing a search warrant.

(CNN)[Breaking news update at 8:27 p.m. ET]

Seven law enforcement officers were shot, one fatally, during a standoff in Florence, South Carolina on Wednesday, Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler said. Florence County Sheriff's deputies were executing a search warrant when the suspected shooter opened fire, authorities said.

It is always a shame when police officers in a community are short and/or killed. It shows a complete lack of respect for the office. What we worry about the most is that this type of event does not start any copy cats.

Condolences to the family at this point. Hopefully, none of the other officers that have been shot will pass away.

I can recall as a kid / teen that if we saw a squad car we'd all scatter like a covey of quail (even if we hadn't done anything wrong yet :)).......nowadays punks and thugs not only don't scatter they stand their ground and shoot it out with law enforcement and or lure them into a ambush.

Times have really changed.

Being a police officer is a rather thankless job...especially in many of our cities. Every year, over 100 police die in the line of duty...almost half of that number is in confrontation with thugs. A cop never knows, when he leaves for work in the morning, if he will make it back home for Supper, in one piece.

IKE----This is one of the reasons why we have a few cars with bullet-proof glass and a stainless steel plate in the doors. The SS door plate won't stop a lot of the bullets out there today, but the idea is to either deflect the shot or lessen its impact. Being in the State Police means that we are less likely to have to deal with street thugs and the like. However, there are times when town police departments will request our aide in certain situations that can be just as deadly.

And how many innocent people are murdered by criminals wearing a badge? Alleged "law enforcement" in this country is completely out of control.

When I was a kid, we were told if we got lost or had trouble of some kind to, "find a policeman." Now people teach their kids to avoid them under any circumstances because they are so dangerous. I ran into a friend a couple weeks ago and his 11-year-old son made a comment something like, "You need to watch out for those backshooters." An 11-year-old!!

Civilians have no respect for police because they are not respectable. That's on them.

And all your bullshit sob story [if true, which it is not] could be easily solved by one simple thing......BEHAVE!

Just to be clear, are you stating that "Police are not respectable?"

I strongly disagree with your comments.

Over the years in the course of my work I had occasion to have interaction with police officers on countless occasions. I have always founds them to be decent, committed, hard working souls who daily put their lives on the line for the rest of us for not very much pay.

Like anything else, there are a few bad apples, I guess, but the the very vast majority of them are as described above. Without them, we would have chaos, and the couple of occasions I have personally needed their assistance, I was VERY glad to see them coming!

As an aside about a cop's job: When I was around ten, one night, mother off to work, my year older sister & I in bed, there was a knock on the front door. She refused to get out of bed to answer it so I did. And there stood a big ol cop. I wasn't afraid, just confused. He asked if I had been throwing stones at a neighbor's house & I shook my head no. I hadn't, but I was nearby at the time and knew which kids had, and it angered me that the owners of the house-whom I'd babysat for would sic the cops on me. I said nothing to the officer about them. Anyway, the cop did not argue with me about it & soon left. By the look on his face, I think he felt embarrassed/ridiculous--maybe--about this assignment to 'grill' me--a little girl just out of bed standing there in her nightgown. :)
