“Necrotizing fasciitis" is an infection caused by bacteria that stops blood circulation, causing tissue to die and skin to decay. The infection is somewhat rare, but doctors urge caution.

After two more cases of flesh-eating bacteria infections were reported from Florida waters recently, Tampa Bay area physicians are warning residents and visitors to be careful swimming in brackish water or eating uncooked seafood.

I know someone who has a relative that contracted this from ocean waters....I think in the gulf, not sure, last year. They saved him, but he lost a lot of flesh as the infection advanced.

Be cautious, please.

Maryland boy infected with flesh-eating bacteria, mother says

July 3, 2019 / 10:12 AM / CBS/AP

Ocean City, Md. — A woman says a trip to a Maryland beach left her son covered in wounds from flesh-eating bacteria. The Daily Times of Salisbury reports Brittany Carey says her son went swimming off the coast of Ocean City last week and had red spots all over his body by the next morning.

Carey wrote about the infection on Facebook on Saturday and shared photos of the wounds. She says Peninsula Regional Health System physicians have diagnosed her son with Vibrio.

Very scary stuff, makes me not want to swim anywhere anymore, especially warmer waters, lakes, etc. With the excessive shark attacks in the ocean, even swimming at the beach which was always my preference makes me think twice. I first heard about the flesh eating bacteria years ago, and it just seems to be getting worse and more frequent now. :(

Would not care to get into the Gulf or East Coast waters anywhere. Sharks are attacking and the fish are dying in those waters. UGH
But yet, we hear more & more horror stories everyday. People need to pay greater attention to what is going on.

Right, @SeaBreeze . It does seem to be getting worse. Remember a few years ago that poor lady lost her arm from getting the infection from a zip-line mishap. Not in the US, but I forget where.

11 great white sharks were recently spotted in Cape Cod waters. Maybe they're tired of eating plastic bags, bottles and containers.

30 plus years ago we were on a fishing trip in Saskaatchewan, Canada beyond roads and logging trails and flew to a lake. We drank water from the lake, I wonder if you safely can do that today?

The major bodies of water on this planet have become cesspools, thanks to the piggish habits of our species. Now, with temperatures rising, perhaps for the same reason (to an extent), you can expect to see more and more stories about these infections.

I think it is time to put shark steak on the menu, everywhere I have eaten it in Florida and it was good.

According to news reports, warnings have been issued to the public that entire Mississippi Gulf Coast has toxic bacteria present and people have been warned to stay out of the water as the bacteria moves eastward. Now things are getting scary.
