Flu shots work.

Two weeks ago, my son was at my house with my three grand kids. My son was sicker than a dog.. Sneezing, coughing, feverish... I told him that I really wished he had stayed home.. Hubby and I didn't need to get sick. Anyway, about 4 days later I started getting sick. My throat and eyes burned.. I started sneezing.. my nose was stuffy.. Hubby also felt the same. However withing 24 hours.. both of us were fine. All symptoms gone.

Son on the other hand..stayed sick. REALLY sick and miserable. Last Friday finally went to the doctor.. Yep.. he was positive for Influenza.. the real deal. Plus it had morphed into a sinus infection and he is on antibiotics as well as cough medicine. He had never had his flu shot... Hubby and I... and the grand kids had ours in October.

So the moral of the story... flu shots WORK.. Hubby and I contracted his virus..but fought it off with the help of the antibodies built up from the vaccine.. 24 hours of feeling punk is nothing compared to 2 two weeks of misery. I will ALWAYS get my flu shot.

I know we have discussed the pros and con of the flu shot ad nauseum... But I wanted to let the naysayers who don't feel the shots really work know that the really DO work. At least this year the CDC was spot on in the strains they included in the shot... I could feel my body fighting off that nasty thing.. and it did.. I am certain had I not had the shot I would be suffering right now.. and perhaps into Christmas..

They absolutely work . One day last week I was in bed with chills for about 3 hours . It was my body fighting off something and I was fine the next morning .

Both of us get our shot yearly. This year both of us had the same experience as QS, a flu like day about a month after getting our shots and then normal again.. I believe in them especially for children and seniors.

When I was at the airline they were mandatory like hospital workers are here. I have always wondered if your employer can force someone to do this as a requirement for employment? Anyone know? I guess it doesn't matter, just curious. I had the high-dose and also the new pneumonia shot, Prevnar 13. Both gave me a sore muscle for a few days, but nothing like the disease, if the injections aren't taken. Doc says the muscle gets sore because of the needle being injected into the muscle, not the vaccine.

In a word.. sort of... if having people spread the virus is a danger to the people the business is serving. In the Hospital setting it's understandable. BUT they really cannot force people.. however you are not allowed to work or even enter the hospital without a face mask covering your mouth and nose if you don't get the shot. If you refuse to wear the mask.. you will be terminated.

So would the face mask prevent an infected person from spreading influenza to others? Is the virus only airborne, or can it be spread by touching another person or leaving it on surfaces?

Influenza virus may be transmitted among humans in three ways: (1) by direct contact with infected individuals; (2) by contact with contaminated objects (called fomites, such as toys, doorknobs); and (3) by inhalation of virus-laden aerosols. The contribution of each mode to overall transmission of influenza is not known. However, CDC recommendations to control influenza virus transmission in health care settings include measures that minimize spread by aerosol and fomite mechanisms.

So facemasks and of course good hand washing will stop it from being spread.
