Instead of enjoying the holidays by spending time with your family and giving thanks, Black Friday has made this weekend a consumerist nightmare. It capitalizes on the family aspect of the holidays to make people think they need to get a plethora of material items. This takes away from the original purpose of the holidays.
This rampant consumerism has spread into Cyber Monday, which has a detrimental effect on the environment. Consumers’ never-ending cycle of wanting more and upgrading to the next best thing causes waste in packaging and shipping emissions. I think it is important for older adults to set an example of being financially conscious and environmentally conscious.
