Foot care

Wondering how you all tend to your feet. Luckily I’m still quite flexible so I can reach my feet for callous removal, nail clipping, and nail polish too in the warmer months when I wear sandals a lot. I also get periodic pedicures in the summer. Ron’s the same, minus the pedicures and polish 😉

But I have some friends who just can’t reach their feet either at all, or well enough to tend to them. One has her daughter take care of it for her. One gets twice monthly pedicures. One gentleman I know goes to the podiatrist several times a year and his nails get very long in between times.

What about you?

I put off seeing a podiatrist for years, something that as a diabetic, I should not have done. Finally one was recommended to me who's actually within walking distance. I've been seeing him for a little more than a year and he takes care of my feet.. Best pedicures I've ever had besides the one my husband gave me. I see my podiatrist every three months and not much needs to be done in between besides washing and lotion-ing my feet of course. Sometimes I put African shea butter on them for additional softness. Since I have to keep socks on (in case our kitten "attacks" my feet and since I'll never wear sandals, I don't bother to polish my toes anymore.

I can still reach my feet but being a Diabetic I see a Podiatrist every 10 weeks., it only costs $7.00 per visit.

I can reach my toes ok, I just can’t really see what I’m doing. I use trimmers and I think they look ok. Guess that’s good enough. The few times I’ve had a mani or pedi, I haven’t been happy.

Most of the year my feet are covered. Wearing socks probably helps keep them soft.

JMO, a lot of the polish colours are garish. Or black toenails make it look like a fungus. And don’t get me started on chipped nail polish.

I still cut my own nails and I too find one foot easier to get to than another for some reason.

And not to gross anyone out but both my big toes have some fungus under the nail. While I'm barefoot at home, I've worked long shifts on my feet in walking shoes and I wonder if that has something to do with it. I was wondering about podiatry myself.

Hi Remy, Over my side of the world you can buy EMUAIDMAX. It kills fungus in less than a minute (so the ad. says). It allows penetration and healing deep into your skin and nails. The ad. says it was seen on USA TODAY. It might solve all your problems. Hope this helps.

I have a hard time trying to clip my toenails with the toenail clipper. It seems like i either can’t get the toenail into the clippers properly, or I also get the skin on the end of my toe and cut that, too.
After getting one of those little toe-grinders to use on Marco Poodle instead of a dog toenail clipper, which worked so well for him; I decided to try using that on my own toes.
It works perfect ! I can easily grind my toes down where they need to be, and it never hurts me if it touches my skin, plus it is quick and easy to use.
I definitely recommend this for anyone who has trouble with toenail clippers.

question, i guess I could look it up.....until i do why wont bleach kill that fungus if not bleach some other monster chemical would kill it surly??

I take care of my own. I am also one of those who uses a pumice and then cover my feet in vaseline. Socks follow for bed. I don't like to wear shoes in the house and get very dry heels. I find this the best way to combat that problem. About once a week I use vaseline on my skin, lotion alone does not seem to work as well.

I can reach my own nails, and also apply a little Vaseline to my Achilles tendon area as I find many shoes chafe me there causing chapping. Heels also require an occasional pumice stone treatment. I think that males tend to ignore their feet more than females. I’ve seen some ghastly sandaled feet… 🙀

I have a podiatrist too, because I have a severe pronation problem and need to wear custom orthotics.
But last 2 winters, it was very difficult to get into his drive way due to snow-so I bought a professional clipping kit and also a hand held battery operated nail and callous buffer.

It took me a while to get used to the clippers, they are Very sharp and different from regular toe nail clippers but I am happy with the results. The buffer is similar to the one my podiatrist uses.

I have a friend who has not seen a doctor in about 40 years. She has severe toenail fungus on both of her feet and her son has to use big clippers to cut her very thick toe nails. In spite of all the remedies for foot fungus on TV she refuses to try any of them.

I wear sox all the time, even with my slippers and I use a Tea tree oil moisturizer sometimes at night , and then I wear sox when sleeping . My friend never wears sox, and never buys new shows ,so this might be why she has such a bad fungus condition.

She claims she has plenty of money but will not buy anything to cure the fungus, or even OTC allergy meds, as she has severe allergies. I think we all need to do all we can to stay healthy and certainly our feet have given us decades of service and if they need attention we deserve to give it to them.

They say one out of every 3 or 4 seniors fall every year and yet Medicare does not pay for orthotics as far as I know and often a balance problem, (that orthotics can help with), can cause a fall. Orthotics are Not cheap. My first pair was 600 bucks many years ago, but my newer podiatrist had them made for me at about 350. He told me he was having problems getting the company to make them again because of Covid, but gave me cushions to attach to the orthotics to bolster my arches.
