I have more understanding than you know, ( I have been a rugby fan for more years than I care to remember), what I don't understand is the IRB banning opposing teams of having a display of their own against the Haka and that in my opinion is why the fans drown out the Haka.

No the French were not clinging to each other in the face of the Kiwis, they came out forming a V for which they were heavily fined by the IRB, which was totally unfair.
