Forced shutdown to clear fake security warning

I was researching a dentist and a page suddenly displayed which locked up my computer, accompanied by a flashing banner with a phone number, an annoying beep like an alarm clock, and an audible message that kept repeating a phone number to call for Microsoft support to unlock my computer, and the audible warning, "Do not attempt a shutdown." [Something else was stated that doing a shutdown could harm my entire system . . . I forget the exact words.]

I could not access any part of my screen or task bar in order to end the task, because the warning banner dominated the entire screen.

I know exactly what site caused this, but I'm not posting the name of the site here, since I don't know the legality of that, and due to the fact that the site was identified as "safe / clean" when I filtered it first through (both) link checkers I use: "VirusTotal" and "TrendMicro." It is the only website I was in when the issue occurred, and no other windows or browsers were open.

If you encounter such an issue, do the following: (1) unplug the router to kill your WIFI connection ASAP, (2) do a hard shutdown, which is accomplished by pressing and holding down the power button on your computer for 5-10 seconds until it turns off completely. Do not attempt any other action and above all, do not call any number displayed on your screen.

After taking those steps, I then plugged the modem back in, turned the laptop back on, logged back in, then did a security scan and a Malwarebytes scan. Both showed my system was clean; no security issues found.

I worked in the I.T filed for 25 years before I retired. This brings back memories and caused a lot of headaches and grey hairs, Imaging software was my go to tool to recover. Once I built a system I would image it just in case it got an infection like ransomeware or virus. Always a cat and mouse game with the bad guys! Always backup your data 🙂

I do Ctrl, alt, delete. I have this problem when I mess around to deep.

Sorry this happened to you too. I got something similar today about a Security Breach blah blah blah. Page on top of page, flashing text. The sound was off so I missed out on the noise. I figured it was just some juvenile hacker having fun with his annoying new found power and turned off the computer.

Ctrl alt delete works to get out of so many ruts that I tried that first, then tried the Esc (escape) button, but those had no effect. Unplugged laptop - but should have known that wouldn't work since the battery takes over. I could remove the battery, but that's nore trouble - would rather not - but I certainly unplugged WIFI modem to make sure internet went dead.

It's a sad commentary that we have to deal with this sort of vandalism. Just this evening my wife was using her tablet and a similar page popped up. I think it was the one that looks like it's running a McAfee scan to "help you out." I just asked her to cycle it off/on and it was gone. I've run into this often enough that I get more annoyed than worried. They're just scams, albeit pretty darn good ones. The first time it happened I was genuinely alarmed.

Just a few minutes ago I clicked on a "story" off a common news site and my android phone had something similar happen. Phone buzzed, flashing screen with no minimize button. I made the phone go dark, then got back in, closed open windows, and cleared recent history. I'm a computer guy. This must really freak out regular users and they may end up pushing one of those screen prompts. Need to not tap "news stories" in those little boxes below the main news!

I used to get attacked regularly using the Chrome browser. I think I did an "end task" on the Chrome browser...I don't remember anymore.

I eventually downloaded and use the DuckDuckGo browser that boasts protection from nearly everything.
