Foreign Movies - Not Dubbed

Netflix is really running short of shows and movies since this strike. They‘ve put up lots of shows that look good until we realize they’re not dubbed, just subtitles. No thanks.

Do you watch non-English language shows if they only have subtitles?

Some, but not many.

[•REC] is really good, and Rec 2 may be even better. The other 2 sequels aren't as good. Spanish language. Scary stuff, so you need to be into that sort of thing. Not just childish slasher gore schlock though.

Generally I can't be bothered if it;s no in English. Occasionally I'll watch something Spanish, with subtitles, just so I don't miss any crucial words... having only street Spanish myself.. but really very rarely do I bother with anything less than English speaking films

I watched Vincenzo(Korean) about a year ago, wasn't dubbed the actor's voices could be heard. But the sub-titling was such than following the dialogue was smooth and easy. Same thing with Dark(German), was easy to follow.

A Spanish series I watched Siempre Bruja was easy to follow, I'm about half 30-40% fluent so I focused on listening as well.

I don't mind subtitles. If you won't' watch a film because of subtitles, you might just be missing a great film!! Plus, I like to hear the original soundtrack to get a feel for the emotion or situation that the English words don't always convey.

Sometimes we'll put subtitles on an English speaking film so we don't miss anything. Actors mumble or talk really fast - subtitles can be helpful.

I watched films with only subtitles growing up. It was Father's way to teach me foreign languages he wanted me to learn.

French
German
Spanish
Italian

In French and German, I still have the DVDs of Sissi, Impératrice d'Autriche and Sissi - Die junge Kaiserin. I watch them at her birthday, wedding anniversary and date of death.

Sissi - Die junge Kaiserin (1956) ⭐ 6.6 | Drama, History

Also watched loads of WWII films in German.

Always, although I don't watch that much TV. Dubbed comes across as stupid, try as I might a dubbed film just doesn't hold the interest for me.

I am amazed by your linguists. Your father must have been a very wise man!

Yes, but I have to be in the right mood, sometimes following subtitles feels too tedious.
I prefer subtitles to dubbing. I like to hear the real actors voices. I have close captioning on all the time anyway because of some hearing loss. But even back when I could hear well, I preferred subtitles to dubbing. Dubbing is frequently terrible.

I don't think it's that simple. There are dubs where the quality of the new dialog is superior to the original. Often the voice actors used fit characters better as well.
