Found a Lost Dog

We were driving home a few hours ago and walking down the sidewalk was a male beagle mix all by himself. I stopped the car and we got him in. A brown collar but no tags. Well fed, great fur, maybe a senior or just light naturally. Very mellow and friendly...I couldn't even consider bringing him home, Sophie being her DA self.

But around the corner is a groomer who does rescue work. We took him there. We live between three towns so I called each police department in case someone calls them. Then I posted on two local lost dog sites. I just feel like I should be doing more. Poor guy, the nights go way below freezing this time of year, I couldn't leave him out.

I'd just feel bad if he has people looking for him. Then again there are folks who move or whatnot and the dogs get left on their own. In any case the groomer will probably post looking for his humans. She has kennel space and foster families so I know he's better off than on the streets. They'll find him a home if there's no family.

Your an angel for helping this dog Fur. Did he get scanned for a microchip?

I'm sure she'll check that. This groomer is the angel. Last year they closed the local shelter and then fired the animal control officer. Now the only animal groups are independent rescues. The groomer moved to a larger space, put in kennels and cages. Then she lined up a bunch of foster families. In a building smaller than a single family home she's got a popular salon plus care of all the poor critters who come her way. We're blessed I could take him there. The Newark shelter is so over-crowded some dogs get put down on admission. You never want to surrender a dog there.

Oh and I posted on a lost pet Face Book site plus Craigslist. I'm not techy but if somebody is looking for him maybe they'll check one of the above. But for now he's warm and fed and safe with good people.

Just a question here fureverywhere, is there a big hunting interest in your area? Because I have heard of something that is quite despicable and that's hunting beagles that are either getting too old to keep up or just plain aren't good hunting dogs being abandoned. Is it possible he is one of those?http://www.lifewithbeagle.com/2015/01/hunting-seasons-over-help-discarded.html The article does mention New Jersey as being a 'problem state' in this regard.

And are you sure that the rescue that you dropped him off at is really a rescue because some pounds apparently sell dogs (especially beagles) to labs to be experimented on. Labs like the beagles because of their smaller size and because they are so sweet and docile that they tolerate the abuse without biting.

No, not around here. But the hipsters have all the family friendly dogs. Bangers the bulls and mastiffs. Oh and my daughter just told me this dog has been there before...One of those lovely homes where Bootsy just keeps getting out. Crap, my Sophie could jump our fence if she wanted but it doesn't cross her mind. The dog today could not scale a six foot fence. Somebody isn't trying too hard to keep him contained. When you find him dead to the curb then who will you blame? Some people don't deserve companion animals.

You're right, some people don't deserve to have animals live with them. Maybe this nice little dog you found will be forgotten by the people that seem to forget to shut the gate all too easily and will end up with a family that do care about him. Either way, I'm glad he found you.

Mind you, I was just remembering that I saw a show once that talked about beagles being all about the nose and it's possible that this little guy is an escape artist who only thinks about that neat smell that just wafted across the fence and he's gotta go see what it is.....and then all of a sudden it's a case of 'hey, how did I get here?'.
Maybe I'll give the owners the benefit of the doubt that they're at their wits end on how to contain their 'nosey' guy.

Funny my brother had a husky named Misha. I tried but she ate our kitchen chairs and terrified my toddler son, he took her in. But my brother had a full secure fence and big back yard. And yet...the neighbors got to know his wife. "Yup Misha is here again, want to come and pick her up?". Then there was the six foot trench she dug in the backyard. You wonder my brother even speaks to me now. Misha lived to seventeen years old.

This speaks for getting a tag for his collar, even if he has a chip. Not everyone has access to a chip reader, especially on weekends.
