Of course none of the fraternity brothers sought medical help in time after noticing something was seriously wrong with the young man. The fraternity has been shut down.
"After months in rehab, triggered by an intense instance of hazing at the University of Missouri, a former fraternity pledge is finally back home — though he is still unable to communicate, walk or even see.

Danny Santulli was a freshman and aspiring member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, commonly known as “Fiji,” when the incident unfolded during an October 2021 party. The 19-year-old student was allegedly force-fed beer through a tube and ordered to down a bottle of vodka by his brothers, which resulted in a severe case of alcohol poisoning.

“He has massive brain damage,” his lawyer, David Bianchi, told the Columbia Daily Tribune Tuesday, adding that his mother has been forced to quit her job to provide him full-time care."

When I first learned what "Hazing" was, I thought, "These idiots are attending a University, which suggests they want an education. Amazing how they can be so stupid."

These "victims" can always say no ....... no I choose not to be a part of your little club. So, no hazing, and eventually maybe ,no more clubs . If they are so weak minded , that they are so easily talked into that crap .... frankly I do not feel sorry for them.

No one takes responsibility for their own actions anylonger ...... he chose to be part of the "cool" and it cost him big-time. The other "club" members are not at fault IMO.

When I was in college, I was invited to join a fraternity. I turned it down because I was never a joiner. Things were much, much different back then and hazing was game on. I just had no interest. I knew my parents spent a lot of money for me to go to college and I wanted to do the best I could. Joining a fraternity, I thought, would have been a distraction.

I was told about one incident on campus when frat night occurred, which was when the newbies joined a fraternity and he had to swallow two whole Alka Seltzers followed by drinking a bottle of Coke. As you can imagine, the ambulance was called and the kid was taken to the hospital to get his stomach pumped. That had to be a horrible experience.

This is so awful, everyone knows by now that swallowing a bottle of Vodka can kill you, but they keep right on doing it.

The whole "live in, college experience," which used to be about football games and lifetime friendships has turned bad. Boys die and girls get raped.

I'd like to see every town have a free or else very inexpensive commuter college where even the poorest people can stay home and get a degree. I think that would be a better use of government money than paying off student loans for those big party schools.

I too, agree with the above posters that say this was a very bad choice .....but a choice to participate..
These Hazing deaths or injuries have been in the news for decades ..... Most or all should be aware of this .....

Perhaps these kids or parents say to themselves......... " that happens to other people" ..."i can handle it those others were weak " ....... "my child will not do this we taught him better" ......... " it is not that dangerous"

It is both the unwillingness to take responsibility for bad decisions ............ and NOT learning from others experience........

Also these keep getting worse because like the challenges / stunts on social media each one gets a bit more risky or dangerous
So many applaud this behavior look ............at the success of TV shows that have people show off very dangerous stunts..... as depicted as "Talent" crazy risks not worth it.
Also like those who risk falling off cliffs or like recent animal attack for a SELFIE ....

A chance to win a monetary prize or worse number of LIKES ......... yet people will risk serious and long term injury ....... that will hamper the REST of their lives.....

It's the peer pressure and wanting to fit in, be a part of something that is probably perceived as being very cool. Unfortunately it's often the wrong choice.
I've had (former) friends who asked me to do things I wouldn't do. I've always wanted to fit in. But I've never been so desperate for friendship that I would do something destructive to me or others.
Being an independent thinker has its advantages; especially now.

I think it is normal for young men to want to face challenges to prove how tough they are, but it seems like much too often fraternities are not the right place to look for that. I had a coworker who told me about one practice in his country where young men have to jump over a cow, or maybe onto a cow, I forget the details, but at least it was one crazy challenge that everyone understood and not a random made-up stunt a class of ignorant college kids think up.

I agree with the points in your reply. And I'm sure this sentence is part of the reason:"Perhaps these kids or parents say to themselves......... " that happens to other people" ...
@Della Unfortunately what you replied is true as well. And I like your idea about access to inexpensive college courses. Many institutions are offering online courses. But I don't know the cost. My Honorary Granddaughter got her masters online.
@win231 Good for you for not caving to peer pressure. It takes sense and strength.

Hazing in college, and other places, has long been a right of passage for young folks. It is stupid and serves no useful purpose I know of.

When my father was a freshman at LSU he had an L shaved into his hair, so did all the male freshmen. Part of their hazing, fortunately it grew back.

A few years before I got to high school a student died after a hazing event at my school. Some idiots decided to try giving him an air enema in the auto shop... Tragic, but it was what probably ended hazing there.

I don't recall ever being hazed, but then I never had any interest in fraternities, I think those guys had to put up with it.

This hazing incident took place at the University of Missouri, in Columbia, MO. It has been all over our local news since it happened. The fraternity involved has been shut down. "Educated Idiots" seemed to be their primary membership.
