Freedom quote. Do you agree?

"Freedom is measured by the amount of control you have over the things upon which you are dependent."
I think that is true, for me anyway.
freedom is an illusion that we think we want because it sounds attractive to own
Some truth to that too. We have to give up a lot of freedom for civilization and society to work. One of the tradeoffs for our way of life.

If there were true freedom all material matter would cease to exist and everything would be one. But that isn't true freedom because are dependent on each other to exist. True freedom is self-sufficient, self-reliant, and self-generating to be one in self without need or desire of anyone or anything but for survival of self.

Freedom is limited by what you choose and think.

The concept of freedom is based on so much opinion, propaganda, bias, bigotry, and individual circumstances that the word doesn't mean much. For some, freedom can mean little more than getting away with as much dumb shit as they can, or even restricting the freedom of others. Total freedom does not exist, probably not even in the animal world. It might be measured on an array of sliding scales. It's not a matter of having it or not.

I think JustDave is correct that, to many, freedom is a selfish concept-what can I do without regard for others. If you want total freedom, you have to live alone and never have contact with another human being. Living with others brings obligations. Freedom is prospering, while fulfilling those obligations.
Kind of the same, as C. M. Mills.

I think that the quote provides a pragmatic and reasonable but not comprehensive or all-encompassing definition of freedom. You’re unlikely to get that in a single sentence…
Although it does, I believe, encapsulate the essence - in any and everything there'll always be "But how about...???"

"Freedom is measured by the amount of control you have over the things upon which you are dependent."
- C. Wright Mills

I'll need to sleep on it before I respond.
Freedom needs to be respected or it will be lost. Kinda like here in America. I used to go to the store in freedom, now I go looking around me a lot because you never know who is going to shoot or cold cock you out of the blue.

The closest anyone comes to experience true freedom is to live off grid. But the second you interact with anyone, freedom is reduced by society rules and government laws. In democratic countries the illusion of freedom is maintained, but it is an illusion.

Yes, you can walk out of your house at any time. But your house is controlled by many governmental regulations supposedly for the welfare of the residents. Try building a house without building permits.

Then the minute you step out of your house local, state, and federal laws control our so called freedom. There are actually regulations for how high your grass can grow, and if the city decides to get picky, they will measure the height of your grass, and leave a notice to cut your grass. 😂

Even the grass is not free
