Here in Oz able to watch films everyday on various channels - from very enjoyable to least? Today popped up this one I have seen 3-4 times now - Based in the South Pacific and Pearl Harbor eventually at the end of the film by the Japanese. Frank Sinatra ; Bert Lancaster ; Cliff Montgomery and Debra Kerr et al. I am certainly beginning to enjoy black and white rather than color films - and this has its 'corny' moments but I just glide by those. Good performances all around. I almost could imagine I was there with 'em but wouldn't have wanted to be in reality!
 

I too am a fan of old B&W films and Deborah Kerr is one of my favorite performers. I love her in the 1964 film ‘Night of the Iguana’ where she is a penniless spinster sketch artist traveling through Mexico with her poet grandfather.

‘Lillies of the Field’ a B&W film with Sidney Poitier from 1963 IMO is a must see. My girlfriend and I went to see it. I then took my grandmother to see it. A week later my mom and aunt. I’ve watched it on television with my daughter, my granddaughters and recently with my five year old great-granddaughter. That’s 6 generations.
 
I never watched it, but everyone knows the making out in the surf scene. It's like that was what the film was about. Maybe it was. I don't know.
 

The Man with the Golden Arm. When illegal card dealer and recovering heroin addict Frankie Machine (Frank Sinatra) gets out of prison, he decides to straighten up. Armed with nothing but an old drum set, Frankie tries to get honest work as a drummer. But when his former employer, small-time con man Schwiefka (Robert Strauss), and Frankie's old drug dealer, Louis (Darren McGavin), re-enter his life, Frankie finds it hard to stay clean and eventually finds himself succumbing to his old habits.

It's Montgomery Clift, not Cliff Montgomery....sorry, I couldn't resist.

Very good movie. Its full portrayal of heroin addiction was innovative but remarkable for its era.
I was 11 years old when I saw it in 1955, so I didn't quite understand it its subtleties, but I've seen it again since. It had a great jazz score and a powerful theme song by Elmer Bernstein.

bit confused , do you mean Montgomery Clift ?... and Burt Lancaster?..:unsure:

That was quite a suggestive scene for 1953 featuring Burt and Deborah. Later it occurred to me that they may have gotten sand in places that they'd rather not have...:cautious:
