I have just discovered that the frozen shrimp I buy at local store is 'farm raised'.
I never knew there was such a thing.....thought they all came from the Oceans.

Tonight , I am going to have them with the dip we talked about in another thread

A neighbour picked up the pack for me today and as it was a different brand I checked it out.
It stressed wild , so I researched the brand I usually buy and yes , raised in a pond and fed different types of food!

Did y'all know that?
Which do you prefer ?

I prefer wild caught raw, shell on, but the difference in price usually steer me towards farm/pond raised.

Like @jujube, I’ve read some terrible reports in pond raised seafood.

When I look back over my life at all of the vices and bad habits I’ve had, death by shrimp doesn’t seem likely. 😉🤭😂

My palate isn't refined enough to know the difference between wild caught & farm raised shrimp. What I do know is this recipe for garlic shrimp is delicious. We use the larger 16 to 20 shrimp per pound.

I prefer frozen fantail shrimp over the fresh ones for shrimp cocktail and always have a few boxes in the freezer. I also don't care where they come from.

I have a good friend who teaches a seafood safety course and she told me that I should only eat wild shrimp caught in US or Canadian waters and was packaged locally. She is a marine biologist and has worked in the fisheries since the early 70s. This is her US advice, not sure what applies in other countries. I do know for instance that Asian packaged shrimp are to be avoided at all costs. Think raw sewage.

She also says to avoid fish that were farm raised. It's impossible to tell the conditions they were raised in or what they were fed. It has been described as one of the most contaminated, drug-laden, disease ridden and environmentally destructive foods you can buy. While fish farming is regulated everywhere on paper, it is enforced almost nowhere that matters. It's truly a disgusting industry.

Farm raised shrimp is on the list and it tells why. My son had been telling me for years to stop eating shrimp. I love shrimp, so didn't listen. Then an online friend said something similar to what my son told me, after which I came across the article below. Please read this list of 17 fish you should never eat! The reasons why are listed for each one. The problem with shrimp, especially in restaurants, where I usually ate them, is one can't know their sources for sure. I can't find the other article now, but I also read about how filthy the containers where shrimp are farmed become. It mentioned creatures I prefer not to even think about being in those tanks.
