Frugal shopping

Kroger ad for this week featured Petite Sirloin Steak for $2.97 lb.
Also 80% lean ground beef for $3.97 lb.

Usually pre packaged steak include some steak slices [ugly] that aren't really great for BBQ'ing or pan frying. But not a problem since those are useable if you know how to.

Buying 20lbs. will yield a lot of meals & and vacumm sealing insures freshness for a really long time. The frugal part is in knowing how to divide the steak.

1. Thick slices can be cut in half to make Puerto Rican style steak, or halved again down the length breaded for empanada. Thick can also be pan fried, air fried or BBQ'ed.

2. Ugly cubed for beef stroganoff, in a chefs salad. Ground for Swiss cheese, mushroom, sirloin burgers, mixed with ground pork for meatloaf or meatballs.

So for $1.00 a lb. less than 80% ground beef that is ground from beef scraps I get multiple meal ability from USDA choice steak at a price that is about $5.00 a lb. than it is usually sold for.

Not sure but I think your Petite Sirloin is what we call Top Sirloin here in Canada???

I buy the top sirloin and also cut it up. The centre part I pound out with one of those pointy thing mallets for Chicken Fried Steak, the lest tender parts will go for Beef Stroganoff and the cap part cut into small pieces for beef barley soup.

I have always been a careful shopper. Shopping sales and coupons and all. I always look for the best deals on meats. Had a great little butcher shop near me when I was in Rochester. I could go in, say "Please, two nice ribeyes" or whatever. Always got good steaks.
Going a step off OP....I got a bit lazy with price comparing when we were getting extra SNAP benefits the last couple years. Back to normal this month. I now have to go back to stricter price checking

we have been buying up since i heard about the worldwide wheat shortage...killing off of poultry birds...fuel shortages...etc..
we have 22 dozen frozen eggs...enough staples and canned goods for almost 2 years...frozen and canned meat...dried goods...etc...
we do not drink reverseosmosis water
bottled or otherwise..
we have gardens

I have a limit for how much I'll pay for meat, currently about CAD 10 per kilo (USD 3.35 per pound). Same for other purchases.

Grains and other foods that purport to be "high in protein" usually aren't. Read the label, or look up the protein content online.

Sauces, panko, etc., can add significantly to the cost of a meal. Do the math.

Doing the math can be hard for many people, especially when trying to calculate nutrition content per actual serving. But nowadays there are online calculators that can help.
