A fugitive cop killer living in Cuba has died 46 years after a 1979 prison break. Convicted of a 1973 killing of a New Jersey State Trooper and/or shoot out related charges. Also she/her group participated in bank robbery. She was broken out of a women's prison by 2 men in 1979 and wound up in Cuba in 1983 where she was granted asylum. After years of extradition requests she made the FBIs 10 most wanted terrorist list in 2013

Assata Shakur, sought by FBI for 1973 murder of New Jersey trooper, dies in Cuba

She went under the name Assata Shakur and was a step aunt to Tupac Shukar. Basically a 1960s and 70s era radical as was the group she was with.

I was curious about who she was so I went and read about the case. It was interesting that I think it was a medical examiner that said the wounds on her hands were consistent with her story that she had her hands raised in the air and so did not shoot anyone.

The jury was white and she was black and this was a long time ago, and they didn’t believe her. Instead, they believed the cops who said she was crouched down and shooting. I think in New Jersey that doesn’t matter that she would still be guilty just by being with that group of people when the crime occurred.
