Fund raisers for celebrities? Actor needs $60,000 in back rent

Someone had good intentions but it certainly seems this is not something he wanted at all. "It is real effing embarrassing" I believe that.
On the GFM page, it's set up by one person on his management team to be collected by another. Makes ya wonder if any of it would have even gone to Mickey's landlord? Smells fishy and I hope GFM investigates it. I know they've done that in the past for fraudulent fundraisers.

He was "A," list at one time. Here's the first paragraph of his Wiki page:

" an American actor and former professional boxer who has appeared primarily as a leading man in drama, action, and thriller films. In a film career spanning more than forty years, his accolades include a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA, in addition to Screen Actors Guild and Academy Award nominations. Films in which he has appeared have grossed over $1.9 billion worldwide.[3]"

What I can't understand about actors and sports stars is why they can't save back a million or two. I wouldn't have the energy to spend as much as they spend. If I ever had that kind of money the first thing I would do would buy a really nice house of moderate size (something that wouldn't require a staff) and pay the thing off so I would always have shelter.

I've never been a Mickey Rourke fan, either—actually, I'm kind of neutral on him, no opinion, really—but I was really put off by this at first. Like others have mentioned, I don't have a lot of sympathy for someone who has blown through millions to the point that they're essentially destitute. Also as others have stated here, I have more sympathy for, and have in fact donated to help, people who are struggling for reasons outside of their control.

But the article @CallMeKate posted is eye opening. It sounds like Rourke either truly wasn't aware of the GoFundMe appeal or didn't fully understand it. (BTW, thanks for sharing that, @CallMeKate!)

I wonder what will happen now!

In the Guardian on Monday, it reported that:

Mickey Rourke has turned to fundraising to pay the US$59,100 (£44,000, A$89,000) he allegedly owes in rent, after being sued by his landlord and facing eviction from his Los Angeles home.
The 73-year-old actor, who was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe for his performance in the 2008 drama The Wrestler, has approved a GoFundMe page launched by Liya-Joelle Jones, a friend and member of Rourke’s management team. At time of writing, the fundraiser had raised US$33,000 of its US$100,000 goal.
“Mickey is going through a very difficult time right now, and it’s been incredibly touching to see how many people care about him and want to help,” Jones told the Hollywood Reporter on Sunday.
Jones wrote on GoFundMe that the fundraiser was “created with Mickey’s full permission to help cover immediate housing-related expenses and prevent that from happening”.
'...friend and member of his management team'

Seems like his management team didn't manage him or his money.

Can't believe he didn't have agents, accountants, tax preparers, lawyers etc that were familiar with his finances that didn't warn him about his financial condition.

He says in his video that he would be contacting his lawyer and told people to get their money back if at all possible. He also explained why he stopped paying rent. (To me, indicating that "being broke" may not even be part of the equation which would make it fraud on the part of the two ladies the money is going to.)

This house is where Ray Chandler wrote the screenplay for "THE BLUE DAHLIA" in early 1945.

The inside is very nice:
Good find, Jazzy. I've heard that, because any old house is worth a million or so out there, they put lots of money into the interior.

(Are those commas right? I wish I had better grammar skills.)

Your commas are fine.

The house was built in 1926 so I assume they don't want to change the exterior.

I thought I saw where his rent was increased $5,000 to $7,000 a month. That's a huge percentage increase let alone the dollar amount but even 5K a month is kind of high. Can't believe he never bought something outright.

His money was definitely mismanaged to say the least although I can't believe he didn't have a hand in that probably spending and doing things that should've been red flags near the end of someone's working career. But that goes back to his advisors. Maybe they saw he didn't seem to care about money and decided to help themselves hoping it would never be noticed/an issue.

Update on this. Although the GFM has reached over $100K, it now says "donations paused." I researched and got this:

"AI Overview
On GoFundMe, "donations paused" or "transfers paused" usually means
GoFundMe needs more information to verify the organizer's identity, bank details, or the fundraiser's legitimacy to prevent fraud and ensure funds go to the right people, requiring document uploads or compliance checks before funds can be withdrawn or, in some cases, stopping incoming donations temporarily."

I guess it could just be that Mickey Rourke did not understand what the GoFundMe page was. It will be interesting to see how this pans out and whether the money is eventually refunded to the donors.

I'm sorry I can't garner up that much sympathy for him. I''d be more willing to donate to one of those actually homeless actors living on the street than keep an old celebrity in luxury living. But people have donated over $20,000 so far.
For the life of me I can't believe anyone would donate money for that cause. Give him a tent and let him join the unwashed masses being babied by mindless public officials. Where are these quacks raised?
