Microsoft Will Pull The Plug on Skype in May

"It’s the end of an era as Microsoft will finally pull the plug on Skype on May 5, 2025. Microsoft will be encouraging Skype users to transition to Microsoft Teams, which can be used for free with a Microsoft account and supports more collaboration features.

“The way we communicate has evolved significantly over the years,” wrote Jeff Teper, President, Microsoft 365 Collaborative Apps + Platforms. “From instant messaging to video calls, technology has continuously transformed how we connect with each other. In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams, our modern communications and collaboration hub."

Never used it. Had cordless, then Cell phones. Mostly ignore the Cell phone junk mail calls 2.

I guess Skype will now go into my nostalgia file, never ever to be used again, right next to my folding maps, FM converter, Beta Max, cassette and CD players, suction cup windshield GPS, and that horrible Bow Flex thingy.

I remember when Skype was like the cool kid in town. It felt very futuristic back then.

For those who currently use Skype for video calls, what service do you plan to move to? Microsoft Teams? FaceTIme? Other?
We have used Skype in the past, but not for a long time now; so if Microsoft removes it, it is no big thing in my life. Because all my family uses Apple devices, we connect with FaceTime, and I really like that. You can do both audio and video calls, and it is easy to use; so that will likely stay our choice in the future.
I would not be surprised if Elon Musk does not come up with some kind of video calling plan also. With Starlink being used all over the world now, and becoming available for cell phones, having a video calling app would seem like an appropriate addition, since you can reach even more places with satellite connection than with cell connection.
