Gardening Question about Tomatoes

For the gardeners out there, share your tomato growing tips. I've been trying different varieties for several years. I keep a journal of all the plants so I can remember which are heartier and which tend to wilt. I keep tomatoes in a bunch of huge pots on the front steps. Last year one of the plants was Beef Steak, the other I can't remember. But not a good crop. Yesterday I got a Cherry tomato. What are some helpful hints?

Long time ago when I was growing tomatoes, the Early Girls and Cherry Tomatoes worked best for me. I went from ground to large pots too after awhile, easier to deal with all the weeds I have. I don't really have any tips, some years they did very well, others not so much, I figured it had to do with weather, etc. Never really had a green thumb.

I've tried because I love them, but after a few attempts, I've decided to just buy them from the store.
Too much hassle with bugs, weeds etc. Same way with other vegetables.
The only other edible vegetation growing in my yard are, a beautiful Haas avocado tree and a Meyer lemon tree.
Both prolific producers.

You're lucky, the winter here would probably kill avocado and lemon trees. I think you're right it depends on the weather. Two years ago we had so many tomatoes we gifted neighbors too. But last summer was record breaking heat...104...106, it just cooked the plants no matter how much you watered.

Grow them indoors. Pick a sunny spot, though, but not too close to the glass (of a window).

Would you be inclined to build a small greenhouse? Actually, you can buy greenhouse kits. Some are as small as just a couple square feet.
