Gave $2 to a Homeless Man Last night

so what's stopping them getting a job ?
I recently saw a documentary where a man followed a bunch of homeless people around for months filming them. Some of them tried to get jobs but, they ended up back on drugs and couldn't keep them. Some of them died. Some ran away to another state. Around here we have a few. Some of them are too doped up or damaged by the drugs to manage a job. Some are not actually homeless. They're just scamming people for money. It's a sad state. I give it when I can. I feel just awful for them.

When I was volunteering there it was during the Great Recession and the official unemployment rate was about 12%, but there is a massive underground economy in many parts of America. I read that the unofficial unemployment rate in that city might have been 20%.

What stopped them from getting a job was the Recession. So many people being laid off. But I'm also convinced the algorithms that scan online applications also hold people back from certain jobs. Like, if you don't have the "right" college mentioned on your application, or the "right" major, they will never call you for an interview. The algorithms screen you out.

I'm sure that is still happening today.
No I was asking why those who became homeless due to revealing to their families they were gay...why they don't get a job, and rent or buy a home. I left home myself at 16...with nowhere to go..not because I was gay.. but regardless of the reason, I had only money for a train ticket.. and nothing else... I didn't resort to living on the streets.. or taking drugs, or begging..I got a job...

People use all sorts of excuses for not working..

My preferred way of giving: When I see someone in a grocery store checkout lane who's counting their change or taking items off their tab because they don't have enough money, I hand the checker my CC and pay their full grocery bill. My heart goes out to people who are trying and need a little boost to stay afloat.

Police and recovering addicts strongly advise the public against supplying addicts with cash - it enables their addictions, delays their recovery, and teaches them them that begging is a viable "occupation."

I've seen a few people at the drive-thrus when I get fast food who I swear to heaven, if I had a chance to interview them I'd bet dollars to donuts they were homeless once, or on the verge of it.

One person was many years ago, he was trans, dressing as a woman and maybe starting hormone therapy? But he still had rather a male sounding voice, was tall, had hairy arms, but he also had nice nails, wore a wig and make up. He was very friendly and nice, but you hear a voice at the drive thru and expect one gender, then you get to the window and see another, so it was off-putting. But I drove away thinking, "God bless this manager for giving this transitioning young person a job!" So many managers will not.

Then another time, different city, an older woman, probably my age, was working the drive thru and she was fast. Much faster than I am. But her skin on her arms, neck, and face had that worn, leathery look that so many homeless can get when they have been out in the sun for years. You don't get that kind of skin from being indoors for the past 10 years. You either have to be addicted to tanning, or you've been homeless.

She is another fast food worker who I think must have been homeless at one point and once again, I praised that manager for giving her a chance.

I've also seen a few formerly homeless speak at community meetings. One was presently homeless and he spoke of how he has a JOB, fast food, but they won't give him 40 hours a week. He would sleep at the local shelter that the City Council was threatening to close (because the rich were complaining about it) and he said he'd have to ride his bike much, much farther to work if they closed it. I think they closed it anyway.

The guy had a frickin' JOB. He just couldn't afford housing yet because he had to save up and/or get a 2nd job which he would once again have to ride his bike to.

The wealthy have so much power, but they sure do not like to really research the issues of the poor. Power without knowledge - power w/o responsibility.

Sadly, I think it's going to get worse with profits up and the working person being squeezed more and more. Foreign investors allowed in with cash. The jerks who run this country and live their lives don't care. No matter who you vote for.

I no longer give money. I've seen beggars use money to buy alcohol, one after promising to go into McDonalds to get food. I suspect some use $$ to buy drugs. If they ask and I'm in the right frame of mind, I tell them that I won't give them money but I'll buy a meal, which I have done. Usually they are already standing outside a fast food place.

There's a lot more to homelessness than just the rough sleepers. There's also the hidden homelessness such as couch surfers, people who are involuntarily transient and those who have accommodation outside of the mainstream conventional housing. So the rough sleepers are just the tip of the iceberg.

Most of our beggars sit under or next to Cash Machines...
