Genealogy Mystery Finally Solved

Most of you know I am involved in genealogy. I have been working on a fairly new but repeating case that goes bavk so far to the mid 1800's for a family in Canada.

A baby was born to an unwed mother living in a well to do family when the mother was 25. She had not married. The baby was passed off as the mother's parents child (g0 figure). Several years later the mother married and had 3 kids and all seemed well. The mother of the child passed in 1882.

Nobody in the family now could figure this out but with research and several rest breaks I solved it a few months ago I finally did it.

The mother of the baby was the daughter of the baby's father making the man the father of his daughter nad the father of his own grand daughter. Also making the the baby her own mother's sister.

Talk about confusing!!

That is confusing, I had to re-read the sentence about 5 times.
So the father of the unwed mother's baby was her own father?
Did I get that right? What a crazy family tree that must be.

I think that in those days, incest (or whatever folks want to call it) was much more common than we'd like to think.
I've heard many similar stories... but WTG Dusty!! I guess that those would be very difficult story to unearth through typical research!! Yay you! 🥳🤩

The way a lot of families handled a daughter's out-of-wedlock "delicate condition", when they couldn't get her married off fast enough, was for the mother and daughter to go off to Europe or somewhere for a long trip and during that trip, WOW! Mom gave birth to a late-in-life baby who she brought home to raise as her own. Daughter could then get on with her life.

Of course, if the family couldn't afford that, Daughter was just sent off to live with grandma somewhere as many miles away as possible and the baby was taken off for adoption. There were a lot of "unwed mothers" homes around, too. A friend of mine in high school was sent off to one of those.

My half sister had a child to her father ,she was only 14 and turned 15 , ….2 weeks after the child was born
she spent her last days in a hospice trying to trace what happened to the child to no avail …( the child simply disappeared from the house)

the half sister died at 49 ( she was 10 years younger then me )
Pretty sure I’ve already mentioned this …...a “half sister” or “cousin” has recently popped up on my Ancestry..wonder it’s Vicki’s child ? But would a same mother…different father to mine ….show up as a half sister ? @dusty

I actually found a newspaper article a few days ago from when my father was murdered by a 14 year old boy
apprently the boy walked into the police station and causally said …”oh I just killed a bloke“ that was 1971
My father was 43

I must be interesting going through tracing family’s like you do

Yes. Example: your faher has sex with several women over 10 yrs. When they grow up and want to know who their father is. No one will tell them even if they know. So the child does the DNA with Ancestry, it is posted and hits start to come in saying this person is your half sister or brother. I have 6 half brothers all from different mothers but we all share the same father. Those kids are my half siblings, meaning that we only share the DNA from one parent. So if you get a hint that there is a half sib out there be sure to answer and message the person and find out all you can re the connection to the parent you share.

I am my father's child and also with a long term wife, my mother's child. My father had relations with several women and the product of those relations are my "half" brothers or sisters.

DId I explain it ok?

OPPs sorry ..Half sister or Aunt …not cousin😀 … the person has 3 linked people none of the names including my match …..are linked to any of my family on either side to my knowledge

The man I grew up with was my Stepfather …my half sisters father ( she was a twin ) and the father of her child
