George Raft, (?spelling?), b&w film star in gangster roles

I've just watched a reprise of a 1960s show, "Live at the London Palladium", with Jimmy Tarbuck presenting.

A guest from the US came on and I think his name is George Raft, a very famous face anyway from gangster movies. Anyway, after fooling around with Jimmy, a great character in himself, (still with us, and used to be known as " the fifth Beatle" I think, long hair and from Liverpool anyway), George stated he'd started in show business doing dance routines.

At, well he must have been about seventy years old, he proceeded to do a dance routine, and was unbelievably light on his feet, for his age and weight, and very humourous too. I hope someone knows who I'm taking about, and can put me right on his name if I've spelt it wrong. .

George Raft is correct spelling.
Poor old George was so type cast as a gangster that audiences would not accept him in any other role.

He was one of my favorites in my youth.
