I was a volunteer theater usher and it was okay. But seniority played a part in which shows ans which positions that I was able to "work". Sometimes I had to work far from where the actual performance or event was taking place doing things like watching doors to prevent people exiting or entering where and when they shouldn't be doing so. Most but not all of the other volunteers were over 50 and many had regular spots that they'd work, such as all Broadway shows or a particular concessions booth because the concession workers got to keep the tips.
I also worked security for sports, concerts and other events but there too seniority played a big part in where you were stationed. I mainly worked the entryways and would be stuck there for the entire event. Sometimes i worked backstage but never for any act that I considered premium. The/median age for the security work was much younger as well but there were many persons over 50 who had done so for years. In the end, it wasn't worth it to me.
