Getting a cold during Covid

I am very healthy and seldom get colds. It's probably been a couple years since I've gotten one. I drink lots of fluids, use a nose spray at night and a cough suppressant if my nose is stopped up and I'm coughing (nothing worse than trying to sleep with a plugged up nose or a persistent cough) and my go to, rather than chicken soup, is chinese hot and sour soup which I find very soothing. I use Vicks Vaporub liberally and try and get extra rest. I let my clients know I have a cold, but unless they'd prefer I stay away, I continue to work.

But man!! Getting a cold when there's a global pandemic is a whole different animal!!!! Day one, my first symptom was a slight sore throat. I didn't think anything of it at first...I suffer from allergies which makes me cough (this time of the year is really bad for me) and if I cough enough it will irritate my throat. So I barely paid attention to the throat thing. I was also sneezing and blowing my nose, but that's also part of my whole allergy symptom thing, so again, not much attention paid to that, either. Day two, when I got up I just felt kinda draggy. Not typical for me, at least not after my coffee, because I'm a morning person and it's my brightest time. Hmm. Then I realized I was coughing and sneezing and blowing my nose WAY more than typical. Ok RED FLAG!!!

I immediately cancelled work for the day, hunkered down in the guest bedroom and waited to see what would happen, meanwhile sanitizing every surface, washing the sheets in the master bedroom, etc. I felt worse by the end of the day, and of course I presumed the worst, so I got online and made an appointment for a Covid test, which luckily I was able to get for the next day, late in the afternoon. Stayed in the guest room, Ron bought me soup, and I coughed and hacked and sneezed my way through the night and into the next day, all the while checking my temp (none) and could I still taste and smell (yes) and did I have any other symptoms (no)

Kept Ron away from me, continued to sanitize everything, waited till my appointment (contactless drive through) and then once I administered the test, waited nervously for the results. It was negative, which the rational part of my brain expected, but the paranoid part kept me on high alert.

I don't know if any of you have gotten sick during this pandemic, but man,for me it's been a game changer!! Nerve wracking, worrisome, no more breezing through a cold because it's just a nuisance and bothersome. Nope...now it's potentially a life/death situation!!!

I agree, it makes normal-ish symptoms and ailments, additionally confusing and worrisome,,,,,
and adds all those steps that you described so well, Ronni.

Sounds like you , and any of us, could wear ourselves out, with the extra steps, when we will have a bad sore throat, etc.

The pandemic is so exhausting, and draining, in so many ways. More ways than I could count.

I've had a similar experience with a cold that came on suddenly three weeks ago. Head totally blocked up and eyes that felt like they had been sandpapered. Went to the nearby hospital that has a testing clinic and was taken in immediately. That was 9 am on a Sunday morning and had the results back same day - negative, so I settled in for 14 days of social exclusion at home with an easy mind. Today is the first day I have ventured a visit to the supermarket to stock up on groceries.

Between my allergies and my COPD something drastic will have to happen in order for me to know if I have it. I frequently have a cough with shortness of breath...headaches...stuffy nose...sneezing...sore throat...dry cough...wet cough...tiredness and aches and pains. Every time I cough more than normal on a specific day or get a little more winded in my mind I'm wondering...Oh God! Do I have it? I'm sure you're not alone Ronni. Glad to hear it's just a cold.

Just curious.....anybody else feel the stabbing pain and stinging in the sinus, eyes and head when getting the covid test.....I think it was brutal even for a minute and wasn't expecting this so suddenly with tears running down my face.....ouch and ouch.....I hope I never have to get this again....how do others keep getting tested over and over if they experience what i did?

I don't think everyone has the same experience. A co-worker said it mostly burned like when you have pop come out of your nose. I spoke to a lady that works at a local nursing home. She said they have to get 2 of those tests a week. Can you imagine?

I think it depends on the test? Some folks have told me they are tested with a throat swap, and others the up the nose swab.

The drive through testing place that I go, it's a nose swab. The instructions are to put the nose swab way up your nostril and swish it around 6 times, then do the same in the other nostril. It makes my eyes water and makes me want to cough. It's not painful though, just really uncomfortable.

Throat and swab where I am. It is briefly unpleasant but quite bearable. I joke with the nurse that I would rather she didn't dip the tip in sulphuric acid first. She looks puzzled at first; then she laughs and so do I. Try making light of it and it doesn't feel so bad.

I just got rid of a cold a few days ago and of course I thought covid. I didn't go for a test and just took a wait and see attitude. I paid attention mostly to the lungs since that seems to be the most serious of symptoms. The cold went away and my appetite and energy are back. If I did have a mild case of covid, I now have antibodies.

Are you feeling better, Ronni?
Thank you for asking! I’m not completely recovered, still have an annoying cough and a scratchy voice though my throat doesn’t hurt any more. Tire more easily. But I feel better than I did mid-week, so I’ll take it!
