Getting back on the horse

When I was younger, I was a big cyclist, I used my bike to get around, even when I had a car. I commuted by bike for years. In the 90's I got into triathlon, just for fun. I was never great, always a mid-packer. I was there I met my wife to be, another triathlete. In 1999, I married her and did Ironman Canada, just for fun.

She turned out to be not a triathlete, she was a narcissist shopping for a victim. I had been raised in a narcissistic family so it wasn't too far away from reality for me. She stopped my training by giving me too much to do around the house, and living on hilltops, something I did not want.

I became diabetic around her, it was one of many diseases I caught from being with her. I divorced her in 2022, and doctors pronounced my diabetes was finished, I could go back to a normal eating routine. Earlier this year the doctors started talking diabetes to me again, and I am back to the old routine. This time they are talking more about exercise, apparently the drugs are not working as well as last time.

After the divorce, I was quite sick with inflammation, and emotional problems. Coming off that, I find myself the most weak I have ever been. Injuries have flared up from the weakened body.

Thanks to diabetes, I am trying to get back on the horse. I don't want to go the distances I used to, but 1/2 or 1/4 will do. I am trying to get started, but a 15 minute ride or 7500 steps is enough. I did a hike of rolling hills, 10,000 steps over the weekend and was overtrained. I am sitting back, letting my body heal today.

I am curious has anybody dealt with this and gotten better? I cannot ever remember being this weak.

Have you had your hemoglobin A1C checked lately? If not you should find out where you are and if too high, make changes to your diet and certainly get back into an exercise routine. There is hope to feel better with the proper steps. Best wishes for your success and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I'm 78 years old and have been jogging for 50 years. 5 years ago I started treatment for prostate cancer. I was told that I would loose a lot of muscle mass, and I did. It got to the point that I could only run about a quarter of a mile and would have to walk for a while to rest my legs and then run for another quarter of a mile until I completed the 3 mile run/walk.

This summer I got to where I could run the 3 miles without walking. The doctor had told me that I could build up muscle with exercise.

I also wanted to bicycle to strengthen other leg muscles. I have a Trek single track from the 1980's but I did not want get 10 miles from home and find that my legs were to tired to enjoy the ride. So I bought a Ebike. It's a 21 speed mountain bike with 3 pedal assist speeds I usually use the 2nd speed because I tend to pedal harder and get a better workout. I use it a lot for grocery runs and long rides on the country roads. It's nice to have the pedal assist to get back home after a 15 mile ride.
