Getting rid of stuff.

I have things I have had for decades and want to get rid of them. Afterall, when I am no longer here, people will do just that. There are no emotional feelings or memories attached to it for them. They will just either throw them away or take them to Goodwill to be sold to strangers. How do you deal with this? I am fixing to deal with this matter. Don't quite know how yet.

I know what you mean having gone through the tons of junk a relative had left behind I felt sad that maybe some item she felt close to was just not wanted by us.... we did not know the story etc.
I also took mementos that meant something to me but............will have no special meaning to my kids or grands and I do not want them to feel obligated to keep items etc.

My advice is to go through each room individually and ask yourself when was the last time you used the items.

Then make FOUR piles:

1/. Garbage
2/. Donate
3/. Sell
4/. Keep

If you haven’t worn clothes in years, donate them to people less fortunate than you.
If you have Knick Knacks you’ve shoved into boxed or cupboards; donate them.
If you have things that aren’t good enough to donate them toss them into the garbage
If you have a great set of bone China dishes you haven’t used in years, some really expensive things you no longer use but could sure use the extra money, consider selling them. If they don’t sell, lower the price. If they still don’t sell then donate them.

For a while your house will be a bit disorganized but afterwards you will have more space, know exactly where everything is and feel good that you’ve helped others out who are less fortunate than yourself.

It’s definitely worth the effort and each year that goes by the harder this will be; especially when you need to downsize due to age and health.

I wish you the best of luck.

We're also in an ongoing process of thinning out items we no longer need or want. We've taken quite a bit to the local animal shelter in the past couple of months....mostly clothes, etc. Then, I've sold several items on EBAY, and try to add another item for sale every week.

I go through my "stuff" once a year. If it is just gathering dust, I will give it away or throw it away. Can't become a hoarder of the past. If that makes any sense.

I had to purge myself of a lot of items that I'd collected over many years. Once I was able to look upon them as "just things", it was easy to give them away. I'd done this with a lot of furniture, as well as collections.
Me too..and I took advantage of this summer several months' lockdown to get such a lot cleared out, and gone... I don't miss any of it tbh....

I still have the attic to do, but that's more difficult because most of it belongs to my o/h and the stuff is too heavy to bring down by myself but I've made him promise he'll start on it in the spring..

:LOL::ROFLMAO:😂
Don't hold your breath!

The secret to purging is "compartmentalizing".

The pile of give-aways needs to be out of sight. If you can see the pile every time you walk through the house, you'll start second-guessing yourself...…."Oh, I might be able to use this/find something to go with this top/fix this up so it looks better/wear it sometime....."

When you come across an item that you've decided to give away, put it in the trunk of your car. It gets it away from you; besides, you need the exercise....LOL.

When the trunk is full, head for Goodwill (or your favorite charity store).

The main point is: DON'T LOOK AT IT AGAIN!

The hardest part is finding a place to start.

We, out of consideration for the people who we will inevitably leave behind, are in the process of clearing out accumulated rubbish and bric-a-brac. We started with the filing cabinets and the computer room. A huge amount of paper that we thought might be important one day has now been shredded and put in the recycle bin. My wardrobe has yielded quite a few items that I no longer have the chance to wear. I kept them in case I needed some after five sparkle but no more cruises for us so they went to the Salvation Army thrift shop.

Next it was the shoes. Too many shoes and most were becoming shabby so a few pairs went in the rubbish bin. Today I will make another trip to the Salvos to donate a brand new pair of strappy silver evening sandals, a pair of pink lolly coloured sandals barely worn at all and an expensive pair of black suede dress shoes with heels. I have never worn them outside the house and have been holding onto them on the off chance that one day I might need a good pair at a moment's notice but really, my knees are never going to tolerate even medium heels any more. I'll never wear such shoes ever again while I am still breathing, and after that I won't need them any more. If they can be sold and the money be used to support a charity, then that is much better than sitting in the wardrobe inviting mildew.

The process is not finished. The garage and the shed need a lot of purging but Hubby is more attached to his old things than I am. I did manage to to persuade him to join me in the shoe cull though.

Edit. The volunteers at the Salvos were very happy with the shoes. I had cleaned, washed or polished them and they looked quite presentable. Final touch was to sanitise the insides with a fungicide spray. Even if they can't sell them they might be given to homeless men with big feet.

Very impressive! You are doing well and very motivated. I am proud of you and you have motivated me. I made a trip to Goodwill myself with some of my goodies. Not done yet though.

My mother had a great way of getting rid of unwanted items; she would foist them onto her children! After trying to reject an elephant statue collection, I eventually carried them to a roadside rest stop where they entered into the glory of the trash receptacle...

I used to try to get rid of items and still do once in a while but as Huzz becomes more & more fixed on staying 'till he's "carried feet first" out of this too-big place, I've given up. I haven't been buying much but have quit trying to get rid of stuff, just don't have the energy, figure what's the point; he won't let me even think about getting rid of his stuff and I figure if I die before he does, he can just deal with it (maybe finally realize what I've been trying to tell him all these years) and if he dies before I do, I may just throw a lighted match on all of it...ha, just kidding...kind of.
