Getting Serious About Losing Weight, I Have To Do These Things From My Bag of Tricks

~First and foremost, I have to stop watching T.V. or playing games, or reading while I'm eating. I literally eat almost twice as much when I do. But when I sit at the table and eat...just me and the food, I actually get bored with the act of eating, start feeling anxious to get up and do something else and usually feel full before I finish what's on my plate.

~Start being more active again. COVID slowed me down and I got lazy. But that really shouldn't be an excuse. If I can't get out and walk (now weather is an issue), then I can watch Leslie Sansone walking videos and get back to dancing for 30 minutes a day when I'm not walking. Dancing was fun and I have a couple of playlists especially for that purpose.

~If I am going to cave and watch T.V. while eating (it's a hard habit to break!), drink seltzer before the meal. It will help me feel full, thus help me eat less.

~Eat more vegetables. Make the vegetable dishes I like best more often...broccoli salad, green beans with onions & peppers and one packet of Splenda added, as well as faux potato salad using cauliflower instead of potatoes.

Over the course of 18 - 24 months I lost 26 pounds without really trying, it seemed. Why, I don't know. But I slowly started gaining it back to the tune of 14 pounds. I liked how I looked, felt and how my clothes fit with the weight off. So I'm going to make a real effort to lose it again. I like the comments about not eating anything at all if they couldn't decide what to eat in my thread about that dilemma.

Are you trying to lose weight? Do you have any weight loss tips and tricks to share?

Are you trying to lose weight?
Always... right now I'd be happy to shed 20 or 25 pounds.

The thing that has always worked best for me is tracking my food and calories, and importantly telling people I can feel accountable to.

I think it was @CallMeKate or someone a while back suggested we consider setting up something here where we can do that. If people were interested I'd participate. Timing isn't great for me right now, leaving on a 10 day vacation tonight, but I would try. @OneEyedDiva would something like that work for you?

It was me, yes... and I'd still like it and thought of it again when Diva posted this. I really don't think it would work as a thread, though... just not private enough for me. But a multi-user PM message system would be great. I wouldn't be comfortable having "all my stuff" out there for everyone to see... and all the guests that visit daily (love having them, but... ya know!)

If something like that gets started, I'd love to get rid of 20 or 22 but I probably wouldn't shun 25. Enjoy your vacation, @Alligatorob !

Oh, I should add that I would have no problem at all sharing my email (privately!) to anyone who'd want a more private accountability exchange.

The most useful tip I learned in weight-watchers was vegetable soup as both a filler and for satisfying the desire to put food in our mouths.

I also like to eat while watching TV, so if I'm settling down to watch a movie I try to have a lineup like: large bowl of vegetable soup, whole apple (takes longer to eat), 100 calorie bag of popcorn. All items that take a while to eat and are not too calorie dense.

A dog forces me to walk 3 miles/day (in ALL weather conditions.) I always feel energized after our walks ( my BP is in the lower normal range.)

I buy only "healthy" foods - fresh produce, lean meat, fish - I don't buy expensive prepared foods with unpronounceable ingredients. Surprisingly my food costs are very low.

A serving size of protein (meat, cheese, fish) should be the size of your palm.

Planned snacks - fruit or vegetables (a small salad with veg & walnuts);
- SMALL piece of cheese on a cracker;
- 1/2 granola bar.
- Unlimited foods are green vegetables - it was boring but a salad before a meal (with a drizzle of olive oil and apple cider vinegar) is a great appetite suppresent (sp?).

Eat only at the properly set table with cutlery and serviette (not in front of the TV, Computer or in the living room)

I have a coffee addiction - my drink of choice. I have a "milk frother" to make Lattes - a big savings over a daily Latte @ the coffee place.

Drink lots of liquid: (not alcohol or soft drinks) A 2 litre bottle (8 glasses) is filled with water in the morning and I try to empty the bottle by bedtime. So far I get a "FAIL" in this effort. (water for coffee is NOT included in the 2 litre suggestion)

@OneEyedDiva , years ago when I was super heavy, I was talking to one of the nurses at work, she told me such a simple truth, I can't believe that simple truth gets buried by all the diet / weight loss commercial hype.
The simple truth: Portion control. Eat what you want when you want, just in smaller portions.
I personally use Myfitnesspal app as a journal for monitoring/planning calories.

Fasting periodically, yet consistently, works for many people because your body resets itself. But the process of fasting varies among individuals as they listen to their bodies. Some choose 3 days straight a month, some choose 9 days straight a month (yikes)....whatever you can do and still feel good.

My daughter ate one healthy meal a day of whatever she wanted during the fasting period (but not after 4pm). She also drink lots of water and walked a lot. She was super successful and has kept it off.

I like that method and pretty much practiced it when I was going to Weight Watchers. My resolve not to eat in front of the T.V. will help me be able to do that, well...actually will ensure it. After a few days, my stomach "shrinks" (don't know if that's really what happens) and I begin feeling full even faster. My honorary daughter mentioned MyFitnessPal to me when I told her I used to be on SparkPeople. I think she told me there was a slight difference in the two. Telling people to just eat smaller portions wouldn't help people in those ads sell their goods.

@Lara My son often does 3 day fasts and sometimes 10 day fasts. Even though he's diabetic, since he's used to fasting the way he does, doing the Ramadan 30 day fast is no problem for him.
