Artist Andy Scott is putting the finishing touches on The Kelpies, his monumental sculptures located on the East coast of Scotland.

The Kelpies rise 30 meters above the ground and each weighs over 300 tons. They began life at the site in the summer of 2013 and will be finished in the spring of this year.

They even have their own website. ;)

First thought as always was what did that flight of fancy cost and who bankrolled it. But the more I look the more I really like them. Something truly awesome about it. He's even turned the engineering of them into art form.

Have a look at the Folio link at the top of the linked page to see what else he's built. I like his style. Find the 'abstract' scultures are getting tiresome personally.

Good find Phil.:)

Thanks, Di.

I'm not usually swayed by size, but I think they have something going for them besides that. I like how he uses space between the metal plates - it keeps the sculptures from appearing too "heavy".

I've been back for another look. Jealous now. That spaced angled surface is brilliant can you think how some imaginative lighting will transform those things at night?

Waxing ardyfardy now, but in using that surfacing he seems to have made the connection between their tenuous legends and their down to earth natures and it actually is a very 'Scottish' representation somehow.

The best we've come up with is a huge fibre glass banana, a pineapple, a few prawns and lobsters and a couple of Santa Gertrudis bulls.
' Culture' doesn't do as well here.

I just figured it showed the economy of the Scots - why use metal all over, when you can get away with 3/4 of the amount? ;)

I can't think of a single sculpture in Pennsylvania beside the 1,000 pound one made of butter, but it only lasts three days.
