Giant squid swimming in a bay in Central Japan.

So at 12 feet, is that guy a baby squid? Sure is an ugly critter isn't it? I'm glad they let it go.

Lotsa Calamari steaks there.

What a thoughtful remark, Jim! Given the rarity of seeing one of these creatures, much less given the opportunity to kill and eat one, just one specimen should keep your freezer full for, what, a year or so?

You may now "weasel out" of your remark by maintaining it was made in jest. imp

Octopus are highly intelligent and I presume that giant squid are probably also intelligent because they have a highly developed nervous system.

I've seen documentary footage of a diver (Jacques Cousteau?) interacting with a Mediterranean octopus and it was amazing.

The trouble is that they only live for about 8 years but if they had a longer lifespan they would be able to learn a lot more. I'm wondering how long giant squid live for and whether it would be possible to develop a relationship with one. Other than culinary that is.
