After a years-long manhunt that has confounded police, a suspected serial killer is in custody in connection to the string of murders and bodies found along Gilgo Beach on Long Island, according to a law enforcement official and two government officials.

Four senior law enforcement officials briefed on the case said Rex Heuermann was arrested Thursday night in Manhattan in connection with the investigation. It was not immediately clear what charges he faces, and he is expected to appear in court later Friday.

Sources said Heuermann is from the Massapequa area in neighboring Nassau County, across the bay from where some of the bodies were found. There was a large police presence in the Massapequa Park area for much of Friday morning.

Police and other agencies were seen searching his Massapequa Park home, scouring the small red house to see if any evidence inside might link Heuermann, 59, to at least some of the killings.

Who is Rex Heuermann: How police zeroed in on suspect

Among the breaks in the case that allowed police to hone in on the suspect, Heuermann, were cellphone pings of calls he made to one of the victim's families that traced back to the Massapequa area.

Heuermann works as an architect in Manhattan, sources said, and police were seen Friday searching his midtown office at Fifth Avenue and East 36th Street.

I have heard of this situation before but I expect there are some locals to the area here on Senior Forums that know a lot more about it. The suspect is going to be arraigned this afternoon so there should be information on the charges, etc.

Who were the Gilgo Beach murder victims?

Children were advised against visiting Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann's house on Halloween, according to one of his neighbors.

Neighbors told Newsweek on Friday that they barely knew Heuermann and that he was "very quiet." However, one of Heuermann's neighbors told Newsweek that children were urged to stay away from his house during Halloween.

"Most people don't knock on his door," said Barry Auslander, one of Heuermann's neighbors. "During Halloween, the kids are told to stay away. He's not a very nice person."

Auslander added that Heuermann's house was "dilapidated inside and out."

Auslander said he didn't know Heuermann well and had never spoken with him, but had seen him walking to the train often. Auslander said he has lived in Massapequa Park for 13 years and that he wasn't surprised at Heuermann's arrest because of other various unrelated crimes that have occurred in the area. However, Auslander was surprised that police arrested Heuermann as a suspect in "The Gilgo Four" murders because he thought the case had gone cold.

He has been arraigned. There was some video of him walking out surrounded by detectives which I haven't found online, so far. He is huge. It must have been physically easy for him to overpower these women if he is indeed the killer. Apparently he's only been charged with 3 of the murders and there may be another suspect.

CORRECTION: There were 3 charges of first degree murder and 3 charges of second degree murder.

Great!! Sure hope they got their man, and that the charges stick.

I'm a long ways from Gilgo Beach, but I did see a documentary on this, an evil man for sure.

Rex Heuermann, 59, a married architect at a New York City firm, was caught after DNA from the hair of victim Megan Waterman matched that of his, taken by investigators from a discarded pizza crust in January.
