After a years-long manhunt that has confounded police, a suspected serial killer is in custody in connection to the string of murders and bodies found along Gilgo Beach on Long Island, according to a law enforcement official and two government officials.
Four senior law enforcement officials briefed on the case said Rex Heuermann was arrested Thursday night in Manhattan in connection with the investigation. It was not immediately clear what charges he faces, and he is expected to appear in court later Friday.
Sources said Heuermann is from the Massapequa area in neighboring Nassau County, across the bay from where some of the bodies were found. There was a large police presence in the Massapequa Park area for much of Friday morning.
Police and other agencies were seen searching his Massapequa Park home, scouring the small red house to see if any evidence inside might link Heuermann, 59, to at least some of the killings.
Heuermann works as an architect in Manhattan, sources said, and police were seen Friday searching his midtown office at Fifth Avenue and East 36th Street.

I have heard of this situation before but I expect there are some locals to the area here on Senior Forums that know a lot more about it. The suspect is going to be arraigned this afternoon so there should be information on the charges, etc.

Who is Rex Heuermann: How police zeroed in on suspect
Among the breaks in the case that allowed police to hone in on the suspect, Heuermann, were cellphone pings of calls he made to one of the victim's families that traced back to the Massapequa area.Heuermann works as an architect in Manhattan, sources said, and police were seen Friday searching his midtown office at Fifth Avenue and East 36th Street.
