Italian actress and artist Gina Lollobrigida has died at the age of 95 today, reports Italian news agency ANSA.

Once known as the Mona Lisa of the 20th century thanks to her striking good looks, Gina shot to fame in the 1950s as a Mediterranean sex symbol, before later becoming a photographer and sculptor after stepping away from the movie world.

She even made a foray into politics last year, standing in the Italian general election just after her 95th birthday, though she failed to gain election to parliament. This followed her standing unsuccessfully for the European Parliament in 1999, representing Romano Prodi's centrist Democratici party.

Known simply as 'La Lollo,' at the height of her fame in the 1950s and 1960s, Gina was internationally recognised as the epitome of Italian post-war cinema, rivalled only by Sophia Loren - with whom she shared an ongoing feud.

RIP..

She was wonderful and I adored her! She was like the (don't take this the wrong way!) cheaper (for lack of a better word) Sophia Loren, whom I also adore.

Luigina 'Gina' Lollobrigida, born 1927, was an Italian actress, photojournalist and sculptress. She was one of the highest profile European actresses of the 1950s and early 1960s, a period in which she was an international sex symbol.

I always loved her. Riposa in pace bella signora. ❤️

Gina Lollobrigida's former toyboy husband has promised he will be 'front row' at her funeral - despite their marriage being annulled by the Vatican.

Javier Rigau, from Spain, first become romantically with the late Italian actress - who passed away at the age of 95 yesterday - in 2006.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper ABC, the Catalan businessman claimed Gina asked to see him before her death - despite the fact they were locked in legal battles over the past decade.

n 2006, the late Italian actress announced she was engaged to boyfriend Javier Rigau, who was 34 years her junior.

But two months later, the screen icon called off the nuptials. In November 2010, Gina alleged Javier staged a wedding in an attempt to get his hands on her fortune.

Six years later, she claimed in an Italian fraud and forgery trial that they had never consummated their relationship.

She also claimed he tricked her into signing a power of attorney document following years of dating which Rigau says started when they met at a party in Monte Carlo in 1984 when he was 23 and Lollobrigida was 57.

I was just coming of age when she was considered number one. I thinly grasped that she was one "hot mama," and I guessed that was pretty important, but I was still just a kid living in a world that was defined and prioritized by adults. The first real awareness of what this was all about happened when a very young Ann Margret showed up in a movie called Bye Bye Birdy. Something really good happened to me, and I understood, not completely, but enough to help me start to define my own priorities, and sort out a lot of new confusions.

But I got side tracked. I'm happy Gina led such a long and purposeful life. My she rest in peace.

Back in the day I thought Ava Gardner was the most beautiful actress I'd ever seen. This was after I saw her in One Touch of Venus.
Re Gina: This is the 1st I heard this news She was a beauty too. May she rest in peace.
You and I have love of One Touch of Venus & Mr. Peabody & the Mermaid! Did you also like Mighty Joe Young? Oh, I know I'm going way off track, but you love two of my all time favorite movies!

I do love both of those movies so much and have watched each of them several times. 😍 But I watched Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid most often. I have colorized versions of both on DVD. I did like Mighty Joe Young but haven't seen that movie in decades.
