Giving a talk tomorrow to Country Women's Association meeting.

Yes, the heading is correct. I have been asked to give a talk to the Greystanes branch of the CWA tomorrow.

The topic is Papua New Guinea.

Why? Because every year a different country is chosen for the members to research. 2019 it is PNG.

Why me? Because I've been there. For a couple of weeks. On a holiday. And my dad served there in the AIF. And I've read a couple of books. And my daughter dobbed me in.

This is a case of me being the one eyed man in the Kingdom of the Blind.

I've been madly looking for material on the internet to better educate myself and I'm glad I did. I understand a bit better now how and why Australia became involved in Papua, even before Federation in 1901. I've looked more closely at the map and know where the important towns are located whereas before I had only the vaguest idea. I can now locate Manus Island, for example.

I think I am now ready and hope I don't bore everyone to death tomorrow. I do have some show and tell items if the class becomes restless.

Wish me luck.

Thanks Ruth.

This particular group consists of women my daughter's age. The Country Women's Association is a long established association committed to supporting women in rural and isolated parts of Australia. Although this branch is in Sydney, the same principles apply. Most people think of them as being very conservative and all about baking and hand crafts, but they also lobby governments in a non partisan way on behalf of women . They raise money to support women who need to travel to the city for medical treatment or just for a much needed vacation. They have a cottage where country women can stay when they need to. In times of natural emergencies the CWA is often entrusted with distribution of supplies and other forms of relief. Their network is very well organised.

I think you'll do great Warrigal. I read somewhere that public speaking is more fearful to some people than death. If I know my subject I don't mind public speaking either, as long as I have a few jokes to throw in there. Do you use humor much in your talks?

Not really. My 'talks' to date have been speaking at funerals and school assemblies.
This will be a small informal group and my only fear is that I will talk for too long.
I will limit myself to about 25 minutes.

Good for you Warrigal, I have a feeling that
you will be one the best speakers that they
have had in a long time, you come across to
me as that kind of street wise person.

Mike.
