Glass Top Stove

I have an older electric element type stove, the neighbor ask if I want her 2 year old glass top stove for helping her over the years with yard and minor home repairs. She is selling her home.
I accepts her gift and now Im wondering "what the hell is this thing"?
I only got as far as 10 pages in the 60 page manual then I threw it out cause I cant understand a word of it.(g)
The daughter came over to tell me what all those gadgets are for and said "you realized you just got a $500 stove here dont you?.
So far Im not too crazy about it,there are lights all over the damn thing, one light will tell you to keep you hand off the glass top till it cool down.
To boil water seems to take twice a long as the old stove, the damn oven has a big fan in it(what the hell),daughter say thats to help it cook faster. I dont want it to cook faster, isnt that what the minrowave is for?
If the electric bill goes up then that thing is outta here.

Davey, I have one of these [ceramic top, looks like glass.] I think they are really good, you can just wipe it over easily after cooking. Just be careful to not put your hand on the top until it's completely cold [takes a while BUT why would you put your hand on it anyway?] The fan assisted oven distributes the heat efficiently all over the oven.

I've had my glass top electric stove for quite a few years now, and I love it. Cleaning the top is so much easier than the gas ranges. I like the light that says the surface is still hot, it does get super hot when the burner is on, my cat found that out not too long ago. I think the electric is a lot safer too, no flames of fire licking up at potholders and things.

My husband doesn't like it for cooking, he likes to fry rib-eye steaks sometimes and gets much better results on our little gas stove in the camper. If you notice, all the professional chefs on the cooking shows use and prefer gas.

Lovely new fandangled kitchen gadgets aren't they. I happen to use gas. I like to see my flame, lol. But I cook at my mils and she has one of those. I hate cleaning it. Seems you have to be particularly clean with the bottom of the pans or that oily resin sticks to your cook top. Not an easy clean as they say it is, IMO.

I'm sure you'll adjust your cooking to it eventually.

Another glass top fan here. Get the Cook Top cleaner and cleanup with a scrubbie is a breeze.

Davey, does it happen to be a convection oven, sounds as if it might be if it is a 60 page manual. If so, go rescue that book from the trash. Convection cooking is the best!

Yes, that's exactly what this stove is,convection cooking, like I know what means.(g)
I will admit its a snap to keep the top clean. I got 4 cats here and one of them is bound to get nosey by jumping up to that hot surface.

Although I much prefer gas,I have the glass/ceramic cook top as well and it beats the old metal coils by a mile. It came with my condo- no gas here.

I wish I had the convection feature you have!

Only 2 drawbacks I have noticed. If using cast iron pans be careful not to slide them around the heat element too much as scratching can occur. The other is not to store heavy things in the cabinet above the stove in case something should fall out and chip your stove.

Clean up spills regularly but if you don't, eventually you can scrape it w/ a razor blade.

My daughter had one of those glass tops, I'm sort of on the fence about them, sometimes I think I really would love to have one, but, I do worry about burning things on it if I forget to turn it off though I know it has the safety light. But yes the idea of not having to mess with cleaning between the coils and all the rest involved with that, does make me wish to own one. :)

Oh those coils and drip pans underneath... what a pain. Scrubbing out the drip pans, eventually degrading them until rust begins, then the covering with foil, looks awful, out to buy new drip pans... ugh. Done with that!

We have a glass top range and love it. If we had gas, I would rather have it but only electric is available here. You can gave the old coil type electric stoves.

I have a gas stove and love it. For me, it is easier to regulate to get the results you want. I've lived with an electric one in places I've lived in the past, but never could get the hang of properly regulating the heat. I guess everybody is different, but gas is just the best for me.

Same here, the wife says the house stays cleaner without the LP gas that is available out here..

Davey, cook one roast chicken in a convection oven and you will be amazed. Or bake a batch of cookies, No more dark bottoms. The secret is the fan in the oven which circulates air while baking.

One downside, you may have to use different bakeware than you have now, pots on the cooktop must be flat bottom, and shiny pans do not work well for baking, read the manual, I promise you it will be well worth the time.

Cooking time is faster so you save energy too.

And your cats, give them some credit, they will feel the heat and back off. Your neighbor did well by you.

I've had a glass top range for years, in fact its getting near time to replace it....I do like it, RR is correct on the cookware, it needs to be flat flat. Once in a while I have to clean the burners with a razor blade to get built up crud off.

A marvellous cleaner for glass tops is Cerapol by the maker Hillmark [an OZ firm but they have distributors in most countries.]Nothing else I have tried is as good, and I have never needed to use a razor, just a little of this product, and it brings it up to salesroom standards.
