God Bless Prince Phillip

Does anyone know if Prince Charles will follow the Queen or will it be Prince William? I think everyone would prefer William, no?

Hi Lara, most people would prefer William but he will be considered
too young probably, by the "Establishment".

Charles is at the front of the queue/line so it will be him, I think that
he desperately wants the job, several years ago he was going about
telling architects that their building designs were not suitable for London.

I really don't know much about him. Is he the husband of the Queen of England? It's a good article anyway. :)

He is (or was) a royal prince of Greece and his mother was a descendant of Queen Victoria, making him a distant cousin of Princess Elizabeth. The Greek royal family had been driven out of Greece and he was a officer serving in the Royal Navy and quite a dashing figure. He married Elizabeth while she was still a princess and for a while they lived as a navy couple on the island of Malta. When her father died in 1952 she became Queen and Prince Phillip served as her consort from that time. The Queen has said that without him beside her she would have found her role much more difficult.

Thank you Mike, Wintermint, and Camper for the clarification. Haven't there been many who have been a thorn in the side of the Queen? Certainly Diana, Sarah, Camilla, Charles? More? I know she's been fond of her sister Margaret and her husband Phillip
.

Thank you Warri. Now I know a bit of the history.

As an aside I should say that for many years I was a republican (small 'R') at heart and would have been happy to see the monarchy abolished. Age seems to moderate the views of many of us - not least myself, and as I have gotten older and appreciated things like tradition a bit more I no longer hold the same views. The Monarch has no real power - or much symbolic power come to that, these days so it makes no difference in terms of how we run the country. Much of their income is paid for and more by the tourism they bring in to the country. They are harmless enough, if rather privileged.

I think that they do a good job Wintermint, each of them have,
in my opinion been in military service since the day they were born.

I wouldn't like that, they have never had a private holiday, other
than in Scotland or Norfolk since Elizabeth became Queen.

At age 96, Prince Phillip is entitled to turn over his position to whomever. I can only hope that all of us on here can make the same choice at that same age. :)

God Save The Queen!

I remember a commentator on radio (yes radio) long before television when Prince Phillip was visiting Canada.

He was attending a demonstration and the commentator said. The Prince looks bored.

That's one thing I can say about him. He always looks bored walking behind the Queen who wouldn't be bored?

Yesterday or the day before, he was at an official
visit at Lords Cricket Ground in London, one elderly
gentleman said to him "I see that you are standing
down later in the year", the prince replied "I need
to old chap, I have difficulty standing up".
Which is typical of him, making a joke without giving
the real reason for stopping.

Mike.

I tend to agree. Critics forget that in some ways their wealth is meaningless. They have little privacy and their freedom is very limited. Their lives are dedicated to that old fashioned virtue we don't hear much of these days 'duty'. It is an often overlooked issue I think.

"Charles. Who has been a thorn in the side of the Queen."

How so?

Admittedly he made a mistake in the choice of his first wife, but he's not the first young man not to heed his mother's advice in regard to long legged blondes on the make.

Other than that I believe he has provided good support and been a good sounding board for state affairs which she obviously cannot discuss with her husband.

Surely, you can't be serious?
