Godless on Netflix

If you are looking for a good Western to watch then you might want to check out Godless on Netflix http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5516154/?ref_=nv_sr_1 . I started watching it on Thanksgiving night and ended up watching all 7 episodes over the weekend. Jeff Daniels stands out playing the villain but the entire cast is solid. The show can be violent at times but I never found it gratuitous. If you are a fan of Deadwood then odds are you will enjoy this show.

I added Godless to my List, am on a "western" binge, just finishing up Hell on Wheels, and want to continue with The Pinkertons.

Of course, the new season of Longmire is available, so my Netflix time is getting booked up.

MarkinPhx, The Atlantic did an interesting review on Godless. I thought you might be interested. I'm on episode 3 and enjoying it thoroughly; it's about as far from the stereotypical Western as you can get. Interesting characters, great acting and filmed here in New Mexico (so is Longmire, but different ends of the state).

HipGnosis, I'm in Netflix' second tier (HD) and the price is going up next month to $10.99. I spend enough time watching Netflix to make it worthwhile, especially considering a movie ticket is $11 and I'll be watching that same movie on Netflix eventually. One of the things I like most about Netflix is its great documentaries.

Monthly wi-fi is $46 (which I would have with or without streaming) and $5.99 for Acorn. My neighbor has Comcast and pays $150/month.

Thanks for the link Smiling Jane ! I've read several articles about the show but this one comes closest to how I feel about it. I'm glad you are enjoying the show. There have been a few good shows shot in New Mexico lately and in all those shows the scenery has been just as important as the characters.

I just watched the last two episodes yesterday. My husband had watched it before Thanksgiving, and suggested I watch, even though he knew westerns were not my favorite. He thought it was better than Deadwood. I enjoyed it.
I am going to place a spoiler here---
My husband, who loves western themed movies and shows thought the shoot out at the end was probably the best he had ever seen. EVER. It was pretty spectacular. Girls Rule.

I agree, Mark. If the cinematography is good, the scenery plays a major part in the story. I read somewhere that a studio in Santa Fe filmed Godless. The person who wrote the article thought it was filmed around Santa Fe, but I think it looks like Southern New Mexico. That's a much tougher existence, trying to survive on that land.

My husband was intrigued by the beauty of Michelle Dockery who played Alice Fletcher (the woman who took in Goode). So I looked her up on IMDB.com. Turns out she is British, and is known for a role in Downton Abbey. She is also in a series called Good Behavior. I think it is on TNT. Since we cut the cable, my husband found the series on Hulu. He started watching it, and has been binging on it for the past two days.

Mark, I keep forgetting to tell you how much I enjoyed Godless. It was filmed in several New Mexico locations, mostly in and around Galisteo and like other posters have mentioned, the scenery plays an integral part in the movie. I live here and I love the scenery as much as anyone.

I read it was originally intended to be a two-hour movie but they decided there was too much story to tell to limit it that severely. The 7-part format worked very well, especially with some segments longer than others. I think it was a good decision to make the filming schedule conform to the story instead of the other way around.

Netflix is raising its monthly subscription next month by $1, a fee I'm happy to pay if they keep producing excellent shows.

The writing is great, and all of the acting is well done, with no clinkers that I saw. Usually someone who isn't very good gets cast because some producer is banging them or is married to their mama or whatever, but that didn't seem to happen here. It's surprising that Michelle Dockery and Jack O'Connell, both Brits, were able to learn that New Mexico dialect, but they pulled it off very well. Dockery in particular sounded like she's always lived around here.

I was impressed. Now if I can figure out why those title sequences look so familiar, even down to the rattlesnake. Is it Hell on Wheels?

I'm glad you enjoyed it ! I stopped watching Hell on Wheels after season one but I do need to go back and revisit that show. And I agree about the $1 increase. Well worth it if Netflix keeps doing what they are doing.

I didn't know about Good Behavior either. Adding it to my Hulu list. Thanks :)
