Some folks apparently really get their bloomers in a bunch if a thread title goes off topic. It doesn't bother me in the least if I start a thread about pickled pig lips and somehow the thread wanders around
and ends up being about big knockers, to me discussion and chit chat is discussion and chit chat.......does it bug you ?

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, it happens all the time on another site I use and I find it quite amusing ...;)
 

Just to be clear, what is the topic of conversation here :confused:? Seriously though, no, I'm not bothered about going off topic, communication is the priority I would think. Still, for the occasional important stuff, it might help to have that indicated in the topic title? I agree though, some take the staying on topic issue to the extreme but then a lot of issues are being taken to the extreme these days *sigh.*
 
lol - On at least one other site I've had comments deleted because they were deemed "off-topic" or I was trying to "hijack a thread".

So can we talk about those big knockers?

And YES, I find it irritating and disrespectful.

People who can't focus should start a general chat/"lol" thread and stay there.
 
it really irks me when people go off topic. you need to say something else then link or start your own post!!!!!!
 
Some people might really be interested in the topic. For them, unrelated chit chat is distracting and annoying to have to plod through it to read about the topic. A little is ok, but not when it goes on and on and on.
 
Good grief. Is this a Senior Forum or Technical Support Forum or Military Readiness Forum? Goodness, the toilet paper roll should go over, not under. The toilet seat should be left down (or not). Everything has a time and a place and I seriously fail to see why a strict adherence to topic protocol in a Senior Forum is such a point of contention. Lighten up people, sip your coffee and, heaven forbid, Live Longer :sentimental:.
 
Going off topic bothers me when I'm looking through old threads for information on a specific topic.

Like RR a little is OK, sort of like adding spice to the soup.

Now back to the pickled pig parts!

Ive never had pigs lips but have had the feet and tail and maybe the ears. Hungarian cooking has a few dishes using these parts of the pig. It's been years though since Ive had any.

You will also see the feet of chickens in your chicken soup but that's another topic. :)
 
What on earth does pickled pig parts have to do with the subject of going off topic :confused:? I've heard of, and eaten, Ham Hocks and Pickled Pigs Feet but these other items of interest (lips and snouts) are definitely new to me :eek:!
 
How do you define "going off topic"? If it's completely unrelated, it can be annoying and easily ruin a thread.

Some related replies can be viewed as natural extension which helps the thread develop.

I find it very annoying when two members start off-topic one-on-one conversation in other member's thread.

I was asked to comment, just my two cents.

Most admins don't like it, so I try to not do it too much. It's just natural for some people, I guess it's all about how you view the forum you're on.

I would never go off topic on a huge information forum but I think senior forums are more casual, at least that's how I see it.

Truth is that if you are the one involved in it, it's fun.. but if you're reading it as an outsider it's annoying. Ive seen it from both sides.

But the one that throws me the most is when someone signs in and posts a song from You Tube that's somehow related to the topic even remotely?.

I'm supposed to stop posting and listen to the song?
 
we should remain on topic, unless there are a huge number of replies, then maybe the topic is covered.
Making stray comments unrelated isn't fair to the OP.
In academic and professional forums the rules are stricter.
If you have nothing to say, why write you have nothing to say--?
The same happens in real lifeand I have held numerous group discussions
and usually the first few people to respond are on target, then the others stray.

No, you needn't stop posting to listen to a song. :)
 
Does regular conversation stay on topic? Or does it wander around.... Someone says something, and that reminds someone of something else and they comment.. and lo an behold the topic veers from the OP... Doesn't bother me in the least... Seems like a strange thing to get upset about.
 
I think that there is a difference in a thread just “wandering” off-topic because one post leads into something else, and someone deliberately going off-topic , such as turning something serious into a joke, or posting something that is totally off-topic and not just a segue from the original topic of a thread.
Usually, the thread can be pulled back on topic, and I think that a little wandering just adds interest to the discussion, as long as the thread doesn’t go completely off on another tangent.
If we are in the middle of a serious discussion, and then someone posts a song or a flower, or even a cute puppy picture, I can’t see the sense in that usually, either, although occasionally those can fit in also, and even break the tension in a debate.
