"Good Job" ( A mini- rant )

I hate it when one network news announcer says "Good job" or "Great report" at the end of another's report.
What are we two years old? "Oh you made potty. Good job!" Can you picture anyone saying that to Walter Cronkite? O.K. I'm done. Had nothing better to do.

Yes, that is kind of condescending and there is no need for the anchor to comment on a reporter's story anyway. I can't stand how the news is presented today. I miss the old black and white TV days with the 15 or 30 minute news by Walter Cronkite, and then those 2 men that would pass it back and forth from the east coast to the west coast. Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. And who else was out there? Any women?

I'm sure its a gimmick thought up by one of these business psychology types. If you listen to them tell each other how great they are, after a while I guess people begin to believe it. I looked up women news anchors and was surprised how many there were back then. They seem to have all come in around 1950. Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Christiana Amanpour, and others. Today's news shows are more about the newscasters then the story. They're supposed to be like part of your family.
I get almost all of my news these days from German and Japanese International news programs. Both in English of course.

Haven't noticed it over here yet, but no doubt I will.

Most of what your broadcasters do eventually becomes cutting edge innovation with ours!

If only they would follow your example on "talking heads"!

Respectfully, I'm on the other side on this issue. I work with folks who must do good work, even though their attitude and motivation may push them towards something less acceptable. I had to shut down a concrete placement just this afternoon where poor planning and poor workmanship would have made the finished product unacceptable. The contractor lost close to $1,000 in concrete.
OTOH, I am very quick to compliment workers when they do a professional job. Once appreciation is shown... for work that should be done correctly anyway... I've seen total attitude changes in workers.
I stay in hotels between 100 and 150 nights/year. I am a reviewer for the Trip Advisor site. I also get e-mails from the various hotel chains, after I stay, asking for reviews. More of my reviews have been positive than negative. Too many are quick to point out the bad, while no one seems to take time to pass out a compliment. Hotel staff should do good work. That's what they are hired to do. Yet, it can be a thankless, minimum wage job. A pat on the back can go a long ways to putting a smile on someone's face.
The "good job" to on-scene news reporters should not simply be an acknowledgement after every report. Yet, to be on the scene reporting when a baby has been beaten to death and not end your report with "I hope the pathetic SOB hangs!" should probably be acknowledged. To be an on-scene reporter where a family has lost their life in a tragic auto accident and be able to give facts without breaking into tears should probably be acknowledged.

Well said, Grumpy. Some professions deal with horror on a frequent basis. Their ongoing discipline in the face of such misery should be commended. It takes an invisible (sometimes) toll. In therapy-speak, "smiling depressives."

One thing that annoys me about our TV News is "Breaking News" can last for 24 hours. How long before it's broken? I suppose that's how they can justify showing the same film clips over and over.

Now THAT is something that tweaks my angry bone!!! "BREAKING NEWS... President Obama was caught on camera passing gas as he exited Airforce One two weeks ago. Republicans in Congress convene investigative committee to ascertain if this is an impeachable offense....." "BREAKING NEWS... Gowdy committee on Benghazi just passes $10 million spending mark while finding no evidence of any wrongdoing. Gowdy says committee will continue meeting and spending money until evidence can be trumped up...." "BREAKING NEWS... 95% of those dining at fast food restaurants more than 10 times a week have a weight problem...."

It depends on the source. If I'm at work and it's some shiny thirty year old middle management trainee who is trying to be a team player then I want to slap him. But among friendly co-workers it can be fun...a friend from my last job and I both shared having special needs kids. So we often broke projects down with " Great Job!" "High Five" "Give Us a Fist Bump!" " I'm giving you a gold star for that!" because it was understood to be an in joke between us. I wouldn't talk like that to anybody else, but we had a good time.

I get that, Furry, and thank you for a "Good job!" :wink1:
