A Queensland man buried his ute in an enormous hole in his backyard so he could pocket $18,000 in insurance money, a court has heard.
Police claim Martin John Dale used an excavator to bury his vehicle in his yard at Gordonvale, near Cairns.
The 52-year-old reported it stolen in 2008 and allegedly claimed an $18,200 insurance payout after police found no trace of the ute.
Officers say a tip off from the public saw Dale charged with one count of fraud.
His case was briefly mentioned in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Monday. It was adjourned until September 16.

"ute" = utility vehicle (pickup) like this:

Maybe not exactly like that one .....

I think I would want the insurance money too if I owned a car that colour. :) It would have to have been a deep hole.

I've heard of people burying vehicles before... Don't know how often they get away with doing that.
Around these parts, that truck would be called a 'low-rider' ... I like the color..

Over here in OZ it is a status symbol for the young guys to own a Ute and have all the trimmings, and of course V8 engine and twin exhaust, they love cruising down the main road in town showing off their pride and joy to all the girls,{car that is} and i lurv that green colour very cool
