Got quite the surprise last night.....

Went out to dinner and when driving back home on the road alongside our house, one of our cats was trotting up the road. Stopped to let him get where he was going, but he stopped dead in his tracks. And out from the tall grass in our field walked what we both,at first, thought was a bear. But as soon as we saw the tail,we realized it was a wild boar. That guy was HUGE! Several years ago,we did see a bunch of little guys down at the large pond a few parcels down from us. The water had receded and they were digging for insects and worms in the wet edges. Only ever saw them once though. I was worried about my dog and donkey but they were fine and I could hear from the howling of the dog up on the hill that he had gone up that way.

Wild boars are a scourge upon the land. They do so much damage to the environment, here in Texas, with an estimated yearly toll approaching $400M.

While I'm an animal rights kind of guy, I don't think that these animals should be allowed free rein of their surrounding areas.

I saw what the little ones did down the road. What a mess! I heard they came from over the hill on the road where we are moving and they have a terrible problem with them over there. I think it may be farther up the road than where we are moving....hope so anyway.
My friend has five wolf hybrids and says they would make short work of this guy but I just couldn`t do that...

Poor wild boars--they get a bad rap just like so many other animals who are just trying to survive. We have coyotes here that are trapped and euthanized. Like the boars all they are doing is just trying to survive. I fear the coyotes because I have a mall dog and they kill them. In an ideal world the animals would be treated better.

Here, in Missouri, boars/feral hogs have become such a problem that the State is spending quite a sum of money to trap them....and it is legal to shoot them year round. As the climate is warming, feral hogs, armadillos, and even black bears are migrating further North, from Arkansas, and the Ozarks, every year.

I can't say I've ever seen a feral boar, guess I'm lucky we don't seem to have them in Colorado, unless they are in certain areas only. That was a surprise Mrs. R!

Sorry for the hijack ...... Heard a growling the other night, on the front porch. Two raccoons HUGE! I swear they looked like bear cubs...LOL.

I got a visit last night from SIX raccoons. They have absolutely NO fear of me; they walked right up to me, stood up on their hind legs & took apple slices right out of my hand.
Last year, I saw one eating food I left out for the cats. He must have told his friends.

Oh my, raccoons are brazen. Cute but I don't particularly like them. Their grubby little hands have a LOT of dexterity.

Wild boars...makes me think of the movie Hannibal, and also a scene in The Thornbirds - book and movie. :(

I was driving the toll road in my area, around 3 PM. I looked off to the right, as my eye caught movement. Right there, walking through the brush, was a momma pig and her three little piggies. I didn't ponder, at the time, if they were going back to a straw house, stick house, or brick house.

No wild boars here. I have opossums living in my garden refuse pile. They have hands too. They kept taking the screen off my rainwater bucket so I put out a container of water beside the rain bucket and now they leave the screen alone.

They're really as cute as can be. They use the water to wash their hands more than for drinking.

We really don't have many wild boars running around Pennsylvania- some runaway pigs though. So what kind of damage do wild boars do. I've heard the Texas has a problem with them?
Around my home, the only animal that's somewhat scary are bears. As long as you don't feed them, they don't mess with humans. Though humans get all bent out of shape by bears.
