Graffiti- Walls of Shame

What is it with these aerosol paint cans that is so appealling and destructive.

I rode my bike behind a building and the walls about half a block long are covered with graffiti and not all nice.

But there is a small town just south of us in the U.S. that is a tourist town in the summer and they double their population.

You cannot find one spot of graffiti anywhere, not even in the washrooms. The reason? The kids parents get charged with any defacing the kids do. However. The kids seemed to have picked up on keeping the place neat and clean because they get summer jobs there.

Sometimes graffiti is art- here are two I photographed years ago, one in California and the other in Texas

What is graffiti to some is art to others. But I'm from a different era; one where no one messes with someone else's property.

Have you watched a passing freight train in the past few years? I don't think there is a railroad car in the entire nation that isn't smeared with this nonsense.

I rather enjoy talking a look at the graffiti on train cars when I am stopped at a crossing. Kind of wonder where the cars were tagged, and if there are artists who see their stuff later on trains going by.

Art being something in the eye of the beholder, I've seen some graffiti I've marveled at. Some artist quite good but not recognized, paint wherever they can. I recognize property rights but some artists, young artists, have no property, to them the world may be a canvas. I like the idea of hiring kids to clean it up. It is a problem in some locals. But there are worse things I suppose.

Yes there are walls that are donated and the art is nice. But that's not what I am concerned about.

Inevitably you will see the "F" word even on ancient monuments.
