Hello, my name is Greg and I am born and raised in KY. I live near Lexington. I am 58 years old and currently single. I wish I were closer to retirement but with the current economic climate I have to wait until at the very least 65 years of age. I have been doing a lot of thinking about retirement, and have been doing lots of research and planning on the subject. I have not settled on a destination but have been looking very hard at Cuenca Ecuador, as well as places in Florida. But Ecuador is so much cheaper.

I have a long time before I make any such decisions and I am starting the process very early as you can see. I find a lot of information online but I decided a forum such as this one may be my best bet for good information and to meet other like minded seniors. If I stay in the US then right now Clearwater Florida is my leading candidate, but that is subject to change as time goes by. I have also considered the Myrtle Beach area.

I work for the state of Kentucky as a Network Analyst. I have only been on this job for 8 years now so my income will be a small pension from here and hopefully SSI. I may or may not work during retirement. The reasons I am looking so much at Clearwater is that it has 3 things that I want to be near. IKEA, Costco and Aldi. LOL, just places that I like to shop I can do without Costco as long as there is a Sams club nearby.

I just wanted to say hello to all of my new friends!! Oh, I forgot to mention that if I move to Florida then the plan is to look for a senior apartment community, not a house. I look forward to chatting with everyone and getting to know you.

Hi Greg, welcome from London England.:welcome:

I can empathise with you about the retirement age because I'm in the same position, still with a good years to go..66 minimum for me possibly 67 ..or maybe a few weeks depending on how fed up I get LOL

It's a great idea to be looking at your retirement options early but as you can clearly see I'm unable to be of any use with your choices as I'm not in the USA ...but there's many on here who will ...but nice to have you on board!!

Thank you Holly and Shalimar.
I am open to retiring anywhere in the world Holly as long as it has a low cost of living. That is why at this time my thoughts are focused on Ecuador, well that and maybe a little bit of cultural adventure.

Funny thing I noticed on the forum, it recommends short paragraphs for readability but then it totally ignored it when I made my post into short paragraphs. I guess I needed to put a space between the paragraphs, it totally ignored my indentations.

LOL...well you definitely don't want to be anywhere near London... you'd be broke within a year :eek:mg1:;)

Greetings, Greg!

I, too, considered a foreign location, Australia was once on the list. As for Central or South America, I've always wondered: given the number of past violent government overthrows, would it not be prudent to remain in the country least likely to experience such havoc? imp

Welcome Greg. I'm retired in Scotland but I moved here for marriage at age 48 when I wasn't even thinking of retirement. Thailand where we like to spend the winter is a fairly cheap place to retire to. And it looks quite easy with minimum income not outrageous. Lots of retirees and expats here.
